I really, really wished my city would have much better public transportation - to the levels of what other well-developed countries have. I rode the bus everywhere until I bought the car last year. Took the bus once since that time, never again unless something catastrophic happens.. or they improve public transit.
I get it.

It's different here. Trains and buses are rather efficient. Faster and cheaper than driving, especially in and out of Oslo city. It makes no sense to drive. I still do it.

From where I live I can drive to Oslo city centre in about 20 minutes, or 45 minutes during rush hours.
The express train take 10 minutes, there's about 12 trains leaving per hour during rush hours. It'd be much, much cheaper.

Still, I hate taking the train. Walking to the station in rain and snow (not far), cramming up to disgusting, smelly strangers.
Unable to swing by the shops or friends on the way home, and the feeling of always being a few seconds too late to catch the next train.

So, I drive. I try to avoid peak traffic, and having lived here for a while I know which routes are least congested at every hour of every day.

I hate trains. I loathe buses. I dislike taxis. I want to be in control, I want to go where I want to be and I want to leave when I'm good and ready.
For the long trips I want to be able to pull over and take a leak whenever I want. And I want to be able to stretch the speed limits and get where I need to be literally hours before the bus arrives.

Autonomous cars will be about as efficient and tedious as our trains and buses are now. I will not enjoy it.
Don't get me wrong, if public transit was a viable option for me, I'd look into it. But Europe is miles and miles ahead of North America when it comes to that.

I also entirely understand about doing what you want on your own schedule, but if cars can network with each other, all you'll need to do is hit the "piss" button on the dash, and it'll pull over for you.

It's not all doom and gloom. It'll make the roads safer and more efficient. By then, VR will have come a long way and you can have a sweet virtual driving rig in your home haha

Self-driving cars would\will be cool, except that the government (US, anyway) will fuck it up. The only way to keep the auto-autoway running smoothly is to ban human-driven cars, and being the US, will ban them everywhere.

I'm glad I'm on the downhill slide, as the future that's coming is for sure not the one I read about in the 60's. If I could, I would go down to City Hall and kick some officious little prick right in the prick and gladly take the trip to the Moon.

Autonomous autos will still have a tough time out in the forest service roads with no paint or guardrails.

Fine. They can have the freeway.

I look at technology as slowly taking away small bits of our individualism and social interaction. It is inevitable. I have been slow to accept modern change.

It will be a sad day when I can't drive a manual with a nice exhaust burble and a mechanical sounding transmission and engine.

I can't think much about the stuff I want the Autonomous cars to do, but I would really appriciate. It takes control on HW when accident happens so people stop rubbernecking. Now people can do that all they want the car will just keep moving.

Not surprised a bunch of guys on an internet forum would think autonomous driving will be enforced by law in only 40 years... we still have places in the US where there's barely even broadband internet.
