Just that the top of the line JDM trims never came to North America so I don't blame people here forming a certain opinion towards old Hondas.

An analogy is like Seiko watches where people here think they are just cheap watches sold in shopping malls, since most have never came across their better and best stuff sold in the rest of the world.

2018 Honda Civic Type R Prototype Is The One Coming To U.S. And We’re Super Hyped

Quote:
Joining the new Honda Civic hatchback in a world premiere at the Paris Auto Show is the near-production 2018 Civic Type R Prototype, and this one is coming to North America where the 2017 five door model just landed at the brand’s US dealerships.

Honda being Honda, the Civic Type R Prototype is a ‘prototype’ mostly in the name, as the only thing that seems to separate it from the actual production car that will go on sale State-side next year as a 2018MY, is the rather cool brushed titanium-like finish of the body, as evidenced by our recent sightings of testers.

The new Civic Type R is as aggressive and brash as the short lived, current model, that was never offered in North America, sporting a similar styling treatment on the outside with bloated and vented front fenders, breathing ducts on the bumper, a big rear wing, diffuser, plus a few new elements, including an intake hood scoop and an unusual exhaust setup with three pipes in the center.

We don’t have any performance specifics yet, but we know that the new 2018 Civic Type R will repeat the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged VTEC engine from the current car where it develops 306hp and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, with some sources pointing to improved power figures to better compete with Ford’s Focus RS.

Expect a six-speed manual to feed the front wheels, likely through a smart differential that will be supported by changes to the regular Civic hatchback’s new global platform, including to the suspension, brakes, steering and electronic driving aids, to tame those horses on the road – and the track.

We’ll have more on the Civic Type R Prototype that should make its North American debut either at SEMA in Las Vegas or at the LA Auto Show later this year, from the Paris Auto Show tomorrow.

Whats up with the tri-fart-pipe thingy, is that for when v-torquez kick in?

Also, many years in the future when ricers get a hold of this Civic, there is no need to spend money on aftermarket bumpers, cause Honda has already fucked them up pretty good. Comes with factory warranty.. Excellent value.

why why why

I actually find overall shape and proportions of the sedan pleasant to look at, but vent overload and small details kill it.

Wow there is a lot going on with that CTR. Way too busy for me - looks like a futuristic anime battle hatch. Somehow makes a Focus RS look bland.

It's interesting to look at, but give me a boring-looking Golf R anyday personally. Damn I must be getting old lol...

Why do people insist that civics were once a great car? I liked them back in the day too but they were boring commuter cars and they still are. Without the acura division we wouldn't have even had decent engines to swap in.

I'll give you the b16 engine from the si but really.. what else? Don't answer that because I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but my point still stands. The civic was only exciting then because we were younger and easier to impress.

Edit:More to say

Also I think many people haven't been behind the wheel of some of the newer civics, the r18 from the 8th gen civic blew my mind, I still don't understand how a small displacement motor like that could feel so quick yet be so slow. I drove a family members 16' coupe, not as impressive but the handling was better than any civic before it.

/rant

I get what you are saying... But... my buddy still has his 1990 civic DX with a B18 engine and coilovers, and I gotta say: with those mods, that car is FUN!... as fun as the 86 (aside from FWD vs RWD) It handles great, is super light, is pretty quick, etc... etc... Not at all a boring commuter car.

I think the fan-boy love comes from the ease of making a 'boring commuter car' into a 'boy-race-car'

2018 Honda Civic Type R Prototype Stars In Official Clip

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV4mvvo7oPM"]2018 Honda Civic Type R: Paris Motor Show - YouTube[/ame]

Quote:
Honda has just dropped the first video of its brand new Civic Type R Prototype ahead of the vehicle's public debut at the Paris Auto Show later today.

As recent spy shots of the model suggested, it combines many of the overt styling elements of the current Civic Type R into the new body of the latest-generation Civic. As such, the front end includes a custom splitter and new air intakes/grilles. There's also flared wheel arches, a large hood scoop, bespoke 20-inch wheels and an entirely revised rear fascia with a towering wing, distinctive diffuser and three central exhaust pipes.

Although the first video barely features more than a few seconds of driving footage, it goes without saying that as with all Type R-badged models before it, the new hardcore Civic will put the driver first.

As such, power from the current 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged VTEC engine is expected to rise over the current 306 hp and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. It's possible that a horsepower figure near the Ford Focus RS's 350 hp is on the cards. Unlike the Ford, the new U.S.-bound Civic Type R remains front-wheel drive and will come standard with a six-speed manual transmission.

"We promised the most ambitious, sportiest Civic lineup ever and we're delivering on that promise with each new Civic," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of Honda America. "For the first time ever in America, Honda fans and enthusiasts will have access to the ultimate in Civic performance in the form of the new Type R."

After Paris, the prototype will make its North American debut at the 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas running from October 31 to November 3, before being revealed in its final production form and going on sale in the US, Europe and elsewhere around the world, in 2017.

So Civic joins the Evo look alike club? I soon won't know what I see on the street really is.

I really want the Type R as my family car and I was waiting for it...but dang...I don't know how I feel about it anymore.

It looks so hardcore boy racer and even like it's been riced out already.

People call the 86/BRZ boy racer cars....yeah I don't agree, our cars look classy and mature unlike this.

I was expecting small changes...like the old Type R's. They didn't scream boy racer and just added a clean aero kit and other small touches.

This looks like a computer designed it for aero. I feel like it will age horribly.

Anyways we will see...maybe it will look better closer to production and in red.

Honda Civics lost their double wishbone suspension design with the debut of the 7th gen for the 2001 MY. And switching to MacPherson struts was 100% done to save money. They didn't even pretend to state otherwise.

As to taking a lot of effort to make older Civics great, it depends on your definition of effort. Any of the B-Series (VTEC & non-VTEC) engines & transmissions from the Acura Integra (and del Sol VTEC model) are a direct bolt-in into any of the Civics built between 1992-2001. A lot of Honda/Acura models back then were like Legos, the parts were interchangeable with minimal modification. And any boosted B-Series engine can handle up to 400 hp without a lot of effort.

Now, if you wanted to extract more power from the Civic's stock SOHC engines, well yeah those suck pretty bad

Same over in Oregon..they're everywhere. The civic is quite large now as well. They're about the same size as my 2016 WRX.
