I was looking at the Veloster Turbo as well but only because of the turbo and fuel economy 26/38 and runs on regular, not premium fuel. I wanted it as a commuting to work kind of car and perhaps long trips. I predict gas to hit over $5 eventually and remain there, which is really weighing on my decision for my next vehicle. Even thought about hybrids. As I got older, safety and reliability became more important over performance and appearances. What killed the deal for me with the Veloster Turbo was the visibility issue. It seems to have some bad blind spots, I don't care how you adjust your mirrors, I prefer to see what's around me. The ability for a car to avoid an accident is to me a safer car. When I was 18, I just wanted a car that had 4 wheels and a steering wheel. Looks like for you, money is not really an issue but I'm not sure why you have narrowed it down to these two cars, they have nothing in common except they are both new debut cars, and not exactly tried and tested, especially the Veloster Turbo which I'm still waiting to see a test drive review just cause I like following news on cars and technology in general. I think the frs/brz would make for a good first car at your age, it's new and up to date with all the safety requirements. If you've already driven your dad's toys (porsche, AMG) then 200hp isn't something you can't handle. Everyone keeps saying the cars not "fast" but it's not "slow" either so seems just right then for a beginner enthusiast. Why get an old car for? You don't know how reliable it's going to be or what problems you might end up having, especially being a first time owner. Learn the rights and wrongs with this new car, how to break it in, and take care of it so that it takes care of you.
I personally would take the FRS/BRZ over the Veloster Turbo if money or gas wasn't an issue, and besides, you're on this forum so we are kind of biased already. http://www.thecarconnection.com/news/1075718_six-month-road-test-hyundai-veloster-visibility-challenges |

Small cars are invariably less safe in a crash than bigger cars and there is no way around that. Sports cars are not always safer in a crash than bigger cars and SUVs. Used does not make the car less safe unless its more than 5 years or so of technology behind the times. My kid will get a larger car initially until he learns how to handle cars in general. As skill improves he can go smaller and faster. If he wants to race he can go with me to the autox / drag strip to get it out of his system. |

Haters, I'm 18 and i'm trading in my 2011 wrangler for 15k (that i WON) for an FR-S I opted to finance, however my dad told me to NEVER get in debt with a bank or anything, so instead he funded the other 15 thousand, and now I owe him. Call me spoiled? no. Call me inexperienced? haha....
I am more then capable of handling a a small little car, coming from driving pathfinders' half ton trucks and my jeep, 4 years of legal experience is enough. Get my asphalt FR-S on Tuesday. |

Kids in car seats still and just wouldn't work in an FR-S especially in winter. |

I'm 19 and just bought an FR-S. I absolutely love the thing. I will admit, I'm a bit nervous, locking in a payment for 5 years while I'm in school, though. My dad has agreed to help me if times get too tough to juggle a job and school (software engineering major). Just keep that in mind, that you will need to juggle school and a job, and there is really no way out other than selling the car.
The insurance, really isn't that bad, about $800 every 6 months, but I am also an A only student, and a full-time one at that, with 0 tickets on my record (let's see if the FR-S changes that. =P). |

I understand valuing your and your children's lives more than a car, but a new car is seriously a waste of money on a first car. I just sold a $43,000 Audi A4 to a 17yr-old for her first car, and while it's the safest possible car she could be in, I shudder to think of what it'll be worth in 5 years after it's gotten some good dings, scrapes, stains, or possibly a serious accident. That said, a used car with good safety ratings is the best alternative. Big SUV's are NOT the answer, either. An SUV has much less ability to avoid an accident in the first place, and only puts other motorists in danger when there's an inexperienced young'un behind the wheel.
Back to what I said previously - driving courses, autocross events, car control clinics - do 'em all! And stay off the damn cell phone.

Sooo..... to answer your question, like some of the others said. test drive both. its all about what you like. IMO Hyundai is still not up to par in terms of building a solid car, I test drove the genesis and yea its got the power but everything else about it was not great, shifts felt long and not firm, steering lacked response, and many other things. VS the FRS was all the above, I would buy an integra type R used before going hyundai simply based on the feel of a car

also i bet the feeling of having your itr carjacked is not as good as having the feeling of a 100k mile warranty and a new car...and im having trouble deciding if you are seriously trying to compare the feel of an itr to a veloster |

- 18 years old, but thinks 4 years driving experience is "enough"? Check - knows that he can handle a small car because he's driven a bunch of trucks and a jeep? Check - doesn't consider himself spoiled when his dad lends him 15k? Check Any way you cut it, this post screams inexperience and attitude. Trust me, we were all there once too and you grow out of it. It takes time to learn humility and gain driving experience - and advice from other people is a good thing (though the Internet isn't always the best place for it). |
