When you have two IT managers arguing in circles about network standardization and a single vendor solution, looking up Yakety Sax on YouTube and maxing out your laptop speakers prior to playing it does get them to stop, but probably isn't recommended.

Bah! I packed a gallon of gas and drove mine empty. When I finally ran out I had clocked 63 miles with the light on. The needle was below the empty line by almost its own width. By calculation, my low fuel light came on with 2.51 gallons in the tank.

I recommend this exercise for peace of mind.

I don't recommend running the tank dry as a habit. Keep some in there in case the fuel pump is of the type that needs to be submerged for cooling.

Tomorrow I will be putting forth my memo of release from the military.

Definitely a bittersweet moment. I had huge ambitions of making sergeant before I turned 25, and was ahead of schedule before taking my current job. With only 4 months to go, and no time off from work until nearly 4 months from now, I think it's time to hand in my kit and let a new bright eyed recruit, who is full of wonder and excitement about the military take my spot.

I think growing up means being able to make a decision like this. I could stay in and make the minimum commitment to my regiment, but that isn't fair to my unit. This decision has been a long time coming, and the timing just seems right. I'm going to miss a lot of being in the army. Mostly going on exercises to blow shit up, but also being a leader of troops. It has been the single greatest thing I've ever done. Leading 5-10 no hook privates, gunners and bombardiers and teaching them things I've picked up from the people who led me during my formative years has been outstanding. I've made so many friends (to the point that I can show up in nearly any major city across the country and have someone to drink a beer with and shoot the shit), learned so much, but I think above all, it gave me a massive confidence boost. It really is a sense of pride to wear the uniform and carry out the duties of a soldier.

But above all, I'm going to miss getting stupid drunk with the lads at Remembrance Day and the Christmas dinner. I almost want to try and hold out until the new year so that I can have one last hurrah, but I know my time has come.

Reminds me of back-in-the-day, I was flying right seat in a Cessna 152, over the Cascade mountains when I noticed the fuel gauge for the first tank was on empty.

When I pointed that out to the pilot (retired AF pilot) he said he was just going to let it run out to see how far the plane would fly on "empty" before he switched tanks. He said we will know when the engine starts sputtering.

I reached down and flipped over to the other tank and announced to him ...."there ain't gonna be any sputtering engine, over the mountains, while I'm on board, if we have fuel in the other tank" .......

(have I told that story before ... )

Well, @Cole, that is a pretty big decision. On one hand, you have the comradeship, extra income and on down the road, some retirement benefits.

On the other hand, continuing would take time and commitment.

I went inactive after 10 years, because the Army Reserve was taking up half of my free time, between summer camps, weekend drills, military schools and extra duty "requirements".

I had just started a family and had two little boys ....... so, family first and gave the military mission to another officer.

I have no regrets, but the military retirement income would have been nice.

Your call, soldier .....

I'm still alive! And the car is also.

Track night was so much fun, completely learning something new. Had a minor incident where I didn't scrub enough speed and took a weird line toward the apex (essentially didn't use the brakes and engine braked instead, stupid idea).. Also upshifted for a reason I don't know now... Understeered and went 2 wheels off. Nothing major, just kicked up a cloud of dirt for the guys behind me.

Still can't believe I went off on the 1st lap. All adrenaline was lost and the lines I used from earlier in the day were flushed, so the rest of the session was spent letting people by but was still fun hitting close to 110mph.. legally!

~1:50 is where I slid off.
