It's AWD. No such thing as symmetrical RWD since you don't need an additional driveshaft.

This still differentiates it from RWD-based AWD cars like the GT-R though, since that isn't symmetrical.

It can't be AWD using "Subaru's signature Symmetrical AWD system."

In this pic it shows the transmission relative to the front wheels pretty well. It is about 6-8 inches too far back to use their traditional system. (The front axles stick out of the forward part of the transmission, just behind the bell housing.)

Subaru AWD transmission:

It's probably a reference to the chassis architecture.

i do see variable cam timing systems on intake and exhaust cams, but that's been kind of assumed since its inception. hopefully they can use cam timing to eliminate the need for a separate EGR system.

Given how stuff like that would probably go through multiple passes between Subaru of America and Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan, I'm doubtful there'd be such a giant typo like that. Regardless, we don't know whether it's just a different AWD drivetrain, so at this point it seems premature to conclude it's a typo or error.

Subaru only has one AWD system. And the pictures don't lie. No way to use their current AWD system with the new engine and transmission placement.

Uumm fail much? Ofcourse you can have different length driveshafts for each wheel, nowhere does it say that the diff is mounted central on every car with identical length (ie simetrical) stub axles..
What this means is that the diff is mounted along the central plane of the car and it's symmetrical in the rear end for better weight distribution, something this car IS all about

Ahem... 'has' (present tense) and 'current'... (If you want to install a Loyale or BRAT AWD system in your Impreza be my guest.)

Subaru still currently has like 3 different AWD systems. none of which will be on their RWD sports car.

It looks very large, and I'm not impressed at all by the macpherson struts.
