I know this is an older thread, but I just wanted to share what i've done with some KIA steering wheel controls. I chose these cause they were the smallest and had everything I wanted on the left side of the wheel. I had to cut into the steering wheel a bit, and then I molded some fiberglass covers around it, wrapped those in "leather" vinyl wrap, and rewired everything to work with my pioneer unit. It does exactly what I wanted, it was a very simple bulid, and isn't very big at all. I'll be redoing the covers so they blend more into the airbag side.... but for now, these make me very very happy.

Although not a fan of any steering wheel buttons that actually looks better (to me) than the new 17 controls.
![]() One question though. How is that attached? My concern is that it is attached in a manner that will send it sideways instead of straight at your face in the event of an airbag deployment.

I haven't seen that one yet and I have to agree, I do like the look of it... but when I started this little project, I decided against a new wheel. As for how it is mounted, it sits inside the wheel. I had to cut into it about 1/4" or so. The cover sits around part of the top/back side of the wheel so it has a uniform appearance, but that is not what I will use to mount it. As it is removable now until I get the covers where I want them, I plan to secure it with 2 small bolts from the back of the wheel which go into the back side of the controls themselves.
From what I've seen in pictures and looking at the airbag itself, it looks like it will only split inside of the stitching. Unless it comes out and over the sides, which I don't see it doing, I think it'll stay in place for the most part. Last edited by Julia@SimplicityInSound; 09-02-2016 at 11:45 AM. |

The one in the pic I attached is the stock 2017s. The BRZs have buttons on both sides of the wheel.

I wonder if it's possible to swap 2017 steering wheels with the previous years (non-control buttons).
