As an X-er I think the way our parents told us to shut up and sit down we were angry, but that gave us a container for reference, something to look forward to when we could make our own decisions and better prepared us for real life which, throughout time, has been unerringly uninterested in what an individual wants.

My generation has tried to be their kid's friends and robbed them of these things in the process. I've met a few older millennials who have gotten to the point where they are like "fuck that touchy feely shit, expect things of me, hold me responsible and give me praise if I really did something significant.

Never used by my mom, but my buddy had switching parents. You know, where they were going to beat the shit out of you with a whiplike stick, BUT, you had to go pick it out and bring it to them. Wow, man; that's some psychologically fucked up shit right there.

It's kind of what I meant. We were unattended from the moment we left the house to hike off into the woods or down to the creek - alone.

Which actually is not the same as leaving a little kid alone at a public park where lots of other people mingle. I was raised a country boy so I don't have the perspective of what my generation's city childhoods were like.

Still though, I don't buy into the modern fear mongering. The world today is no more dangerous for a child than it was forty or sixty years ago.

Maybe thats why I'm so fucked up and is a weeb. Anime is my extremely delayed tool of escapism from when my parents would make me go get whatever they decided to beat me with. XD

Every time I had my ass handed to me I had it coming. I still know my folks loved us unconditionally. In my gut I felt bad for my friends who had no guidance. The "friends" parenting had already started in the 70s and to me it was creepy.
