Yea, good point. The '02 Accord my son drives to college that stays parked 99% of the time has been scraped/banged/nicked no fewer than 10 times in a year that I can identify. None of it is serious on an 11 year old car but would send me looking for a gun if it happened to the FR-S.

I agree with a lot of the previous people. Don't get a new car for your first. Get something like an older Civic manual. This is a car you can comfortably learn to drive standard on and won't get you into to much trouble. They are cheap to operate and because they are connected to the road will really help you learn how to be a better driver. They are feedback cars as opposed to sofas on wheels.

I know you don't want to hear this. But repectfully, you are making a huge mistake with either of them.

I was one of the earliest poo pooers in this thread but I would like to say that IF you can be responsible and humble and take criticism well (since most teenagers can't) then you may be alright with the FR-S.
Most of the people here, including myself, are saying it's a bad idea because 99% of guys your age THINK they are responsible and not like the other guys (I did) but years down the road they realize they were idiots in their own right. I see it my young cousin. He'll be 16 this year and when I give him honest helpful advice he blows me off 99% of the time because he knows everything. Everyone told me I was like that when I was like that but because I was like that I knew better and I knew that I wasn't like that.... yea... I mean what I typed.

Insurance alone should be enough to make you change your mind. You can do metric f*ckton of cool stuff with your life with that extra $4-6k/year.

1. i recommend getting used car for your first car.
2. If I had to choose between fr-s and veloster I would get fr-s 3. If your still want veloster, I would really recommend the elantra. I test drove the veloster and it drives like crap. 4. in the end it's really up to you. |

Thank god my first car was an 85 salvaged accord. I think my stepdad bought it for $1,200. I abused that poor car for a year until it stopped working. It was a good thing to because I was 16 and knew nothing about taking care of or servicing a car.
That being said. Get the Veloster. We dont need you raising our insurance rates man. Jkjkjkjk.

My friend works for Hyundai; he said the Veloster is a piece of $#!t and I'm inclined to believe him, because he drives numerous cars every day just like I do. A turbo is only going to make it a faster piece of $#!t. Get the FR-S, be careful and take some driving courses. Leave the stability and traction control ON unless you're at the track. Have fun!

If it is your first car I would also suggest a used car of some sort. Drive it for a few years and have all your mistakes in that car before getting a nice new car.
I had 5 accidents in the first car I owned. Fortunately it was all someone else's fault but lack of experience means I could not avoid them as I could now. From the insurance payouts I was able to put a downpayment on my first nicer car. |

Saw a Veloster on the way home. That thing's styling gives the Pontiac Aztek a run for its money. IMHO, it's hideous.

My kids will drive the newest safest cars that I can afford. If it happens to be a two seater or a sports car or whatever that they happen to like and will respect, even better.
Putting your kids in some old deathtrap because they are going "inevitably" bang and scratch it up just means you value money more than their safety. If I'm wealthy enough, I'd rather spoil them then visit them in a graveyard. |
