Thanks so much, but Wow, props to that guy. And I never really thought about that.... Maybe I will, lol, seems like a good idea to me. Ya if all goes as planned I would never want to get rid of the car.

Am I going to be the only one who says "bank that money for a few years until you have your license, and by then, you'll have more money, and the price of the car will have come down and you'll have more money in your pocket"?

Also, not to be Debbie downer again, but do you have money put away for post secondary? If not, that may be a more worth while investment than a car.

Props/respect to OP for taking the initiative and trying to do it on his own.

OP get an insurance quote first. At your age you will likely be paying a lot per month. You need to make sure you can afford insurance too - not just the car.
I'm on my third year driving this car already but my insurance was about $40 a month for the car, and $100 a month for me as the driver in the beginning. Right now I'm at about $100 a month total, with $1000 deductible. I don't think it's too bad, the 350z costs twice as much.

OP, just make sure to ask your dad beforehand if he's gonna add you onto his policy, as that's gonna make it a lot cheaper.

Lol ya I'm suprised no one else has said it but you... And ya trust me, I've thought this through many times. I have a separate savings I'm doing for "post secondary" sorry im used to just calling it college. Yes I know this probably isn't the best idea at my age but to me it's basically my life. This has honestly gotten me through tough points in my life and it's become my passion. And I'd rather do this all now because doing it later all of my money will go towards this car either way, I'd rather slowly pay it off than blow all of my money in the future on it, oh and I've found an great deal on one right now, and the 86 platform holds their value very well

Oh that's good to know thank you. I'm not all that knowledgeable about insurance so thank you

I agree on this, but if he does well in school what's to say he will need to pay for college? I bought mine knowing I was definitely going to college, since I needed a car anyways. Not trying to show off or anything, but I got scholarships and basically have a full ride in undergrad, starting this fall. If OP is willing to work for it I bet he is enough of a hardworker to be able to go to college even if he gets the car. Just my 0.02, but you make a really good argument.

As an example, although this will be comparing apples to oranges: when I was 23 I bought a new 2007 Honda CBR600RR. I was paying $260/month (with a clean driving record). Then the moment I turned 25 my rates dropped to $66/month.

Ya, but how old are you?

I am 31 with a perfect driving record and I pay about $120/month. I am sure that when OP turns 16, and can drive, that his insurance will be much higher, than say when he turns 25.

Ya of course, that's part of the reason I wanted to find a job so early, so I could afford both, and I'm trying to get as many hours as I can in, over the summer they let me work full time, so that will work out a lot better in that time frame but, yes for simplicity, its going to be 50 on the car, 50 saving up over the years

That was when I was 16, a little more than 2 years ago. I think because I was on my dad's clean record, it was ONLY $160 a month. Now it is 2 years later and $100 a month. But you're right, everyone is different.

you should drop your money into a roth ira or some other interest accruing account.

buy a beater and turn it into a fun project like taking an old miata and stripping it down for the track. learn to build your car, service your car, modify the car and most importantly, drive the car. use it to develop welding skills and such things. don't drop cash into it. don't start young with making your car your money pit. best to get ahead young with savings.

ignore this amazing advice if you are rich, have rich parents, or have parents that will dump money only into a car, and not into some investment account.

I still owed 2 years of repayments on another car when I started lusting after a twin. The motivation to own a twin drove me to become almost vicious with saving and cutting back on wasteful spending.

This single minded motivation led to paying off that loan in one year, saving a modest deposit and pulling the trigger on a BRZ after negotiating a great deal.

Point I'm making is a strong desire for something can be a positive experience. The mind set you develop in going through with this will prove valuable later in life.

Actually I also bought my very first car new at pretty much 17 years of age. It was a loaded Holden 5.0L VT V8. As I had no prior driving record it ended up being a dual purchase with a family member, to help ease the insurance down by gaining their 60% no claim bonus, but the repayments were all my own. I think it was this experience that helped me with my twin purchase along with a few other big tickets in my life like house ownership etc.

It sounds like you have seriously thought this through and have the safety net of family to support your decision. I respect you for your commitment and determination at such a young age.

Ya ive thought about doing that, but if I were to do that it would be in the future, because I do plan on moving out of the states maybe 2 years after high school, depending on if I get any scholarships or not. And I'm not looking to make a track car(such as a miata as you stated) because this would still have a very high possibility of being a daily for my dad till my senior year. I'm not looking at making a track car or full on project car yet. Oh ya, I do have a savings I'm putting money into right now, and I've found a good deal on one (at least I think) so in total, it wouldn't be taking up half of what I'm making at this time. For welding wise, you do have a point we have a welder that my dad had to use for his exhaust, but I guess I could practice on like regular sheet metal and stuff.

And no not in the slightest, my parents are not rich nor am I, if i was, I wouldn't be working, nor would this thread be here. And if you didn't see, this is all funded by me. The only thing they are paying for is gas...

wow nice job on your determination to get yours too. Ya I've actually been thinking about this for about a year now. At first I was thinking about doing this during my senior year after I saved enough, but the job came up and this whole idea came to my head. Thanks for the support!
