i'm curious as to how much this screws up air flow around the mirror. the TRD wing things push air over the mirror... does this add more turbulence in front of it?

From my limited knowledge of aerodynamic characteristics of cars, I've always been told that they don't really come into play until around 100 mph. If this is true, I don't think a factor like that comes into play for most of what we do with these cars. I'll do a bit more "testing" this weekend and try to get some video.

I have a video... kind of a fail, but I think it shows promise. My camera came unmounted while driving (didn't break) but I did get about 12 seconds of video at 45 mph. I left the rest of the recording in for hilarity. Will come up with a better mounting solution and higher speeds soon. Let's here some opinions... not of my failed attempt on camera mounting, I know I suck haha.

Interesting. I have to say I watched all 58 seconds expecting to see a tire to enter the frame at the very end.

That was my biggest fear! I've never looked at my rearview so hard, not even with a cop on my tail! Luckily I was able to stop quickly enough and throw my hazards on to prevent someone from ruining my day even more!

Aaaw man - you guys beat me to it... Some additional ideas!

1. Instead of cutting the fender metal
Get a ruler and drill holes. Then mask and spray with matte black.
Black paint helps disguise the cutting, holes do the venting.

2. Instead of cutting all the way through the garnish
Drill holes through the garnish. This will keep the arm (where the chrome mounts) decently strong. Paint the "valley" black to help disguise the holes. Take the old black garnish trim and cut the vent material to match it. What you see through the vent material is black.
You keep the structural integrity of the garnish and keep the look.

Not true. It all depends on the car, and the aero being used, but air starts to affect a moving body, the instant it starts to move, and the force increase by roughly a square function, ie 2X the speed gains you 4X the downforce.

I have a pretty rough cut done. Any tips on what to use to file down the plastic?

exE36M3 I was thinking the same thing about drilling the holes and keeping the retaining clips and structural integrity of the part.

Great idea OP! After seeing the new Ferrari F12 TDF hood/fender vent combo, I really want to do this on my FR-S. Obviously it won't be as functional without the air ducts on the hood but maybe someone can design a custom hood in that style??

A lot of good information in this thread! Let me dumb this down a bit.

If I want to do this only for aesthetic purposes, how would it look if I just vinyl wrap/paint the fender behind the guttergaurd instead of actually cutting the fender.

I'll be undertaking this project in the coming days. I'll post pics of what it would look like before (or even if) I cut the fenders.

Working on my fender. I pulled everything apart and dremeled out the inside. Then I bought some perforated aluminum online. I cut the aluminum to fit and bent it to the mold. Then I cut up an old plastic handle from a tool and sanded it to shape and then epoxied it to the center. After it dried I drilled pilot holes for screws to hold the aluminum to the garnish. I also epoxied one of the clips to the end.

After the mockup I disassembled the pieces then removed the rest of the adhesive then sanded the pieces for painting. I had D4S spray paint from a previous project so I used that to paint the pieces then I baked them and left to harden. Tomorrow i plan to wetsand the garnish and polish then cut the fender, paint the exposed edges from the cut, make a new hole for the clip then use 3M adhesive and the two clips to secure the fender garnish.

My major dilemma is deciding whether to added the chrome accent or just leave it black. Any suggestions?
