Interesting...do is this a feature where you can "turn on/off" the rear diff or you physically have to disconnect the rear diff (ie, remove the drive shaft, etc)? I've owned wrxs in the past, so this RDU is all voodoo to me

no, its just a plug! The whole thing is controlled by clutches, sensors and witchcraft.

So, lucky for us, when you unplug the rear diff, it completely disconnects the clutch? in the rear diff-so the driveshaft will still spin, but the clutches aren't engaged so no power makes it to the rear wheels!

Cool, I guess that's the same mechanism that disengages the RDU when it over heats from too much durifto's

Watching all the new DIYs coming out for this car. So far seems like a huge PITA to work on compared to the 86 & wrx.

Seems to be exactly what I expected. All hype. 300F oil temps after just 3 laps in 79F temp weather?

I could see the 86 being easier to work on, but I would think a turbo inline 4 would be a lot easier to work on compared to a turbo boxer 4

That's what I thought too, but after looking at a few videos, it looks like there's just so little working room with that ecoboost. Just look a this video, 2 hrs for a catch can install?!

Right lol? And we've got the mishimoto can at our shop. The boss said, "when you gonna get this installed?"

After install I'll have a better idea of time-supposedly one of our techs installs a catch can on the focus ST and the procedure is similar, but he's figured out some shortcuts. Hopefully we can find one for the RS.

Damn that was a harsh review. In fairness it doesn't seem like most of the issues are uncommon or will be impossible to fix - camber, body roll/brake dive, understeer, oil temps, etc. Same issues a lot of production cars have on track. Will just take some time (judging from those underhood pics) and money to remedy.

The only thing that disappointed me was the issue they had with the RDU. I got the sense Ford marketed this as an AWD car that feels RWD when pushed, so it's surprising they said it felt like the rear wheels weren't doing anything at the track. The RDU is the one part of the car I thought Ford would have gotten right. I'd be curious to hear feedback from other Focus RS owners who track their cars.

But then, Terry is an idiot.

Cars here have been doing 30 minute sessions without issues in 93-95 ambient temps and 270-280 oil temps, no RDU shutdowns, etc.

Once mine arrives I'll shoot for 60 minutes straight during the happy hour at a Chin event.

Seems somewhat inconsistent, especially when you consider that this was not the only time the RDU showed signs of issues.
