Honestly, at that price point, anything that's FWD and not rusty is your best bet. AWD adds mechanical complexity and unless you truly live in snow country, FWD with snow tires will get you where you need to go.

If you are near the Manchester NH area, check out http://extrememachinesnh.net/
I do not work there nor receive any perks...they are a good shop that I have used.

Portland, Maine; 10 year average is like 65-70 inches of snowfall each seasons...

Not even 2 hours of driving away (Which is basically the minimum to get anywhere from Maine lol).

Thanks for the tip, seems like a good place for options

I lived in Boston, MA for 10 years, 7 of which I drove a RWD van year round. I got by, even in a couple of record breaking winters of 100+ inches of snow. I'd never recommend such an obviously awful vehicle in the snow to someone, but it made me appreciate the value of good driving and snow tires.

The worst thing about that damn van was how heavy it was - no one was going to just 'give you a push' to get the thing unstuck when it got stuck, but they always offered.

Heck, go visit Quebec province in Canada - mandatory snow tires, but most of the cars on the road are plain old FWD sedans. I certainly agree that AWD is an asset, mostly to getting in/out of driveways or parking spots, but it raises the price of a car and provides more things to break. On a budget, neither of those are good things.

Corolla parts are everywhere - junkyards, Autozone, eBay, you name it. I've driven my 91 Corolla dx for winter for the past 6 years, TROUBLE-FREE. I've only had to do oil changes. Motor is still healthy at 320k. It was so much better than my 99 CR-V

Well, if it's like my Honda. You can fix most issues with paper clips, zip ties, and duct tape.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a cheapo beater that won't get me stuck.

Currently was thinking something along the lines of a ~150k mile early 2000s Subaru Forester...

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Was just gonna say a used manual CR-V 97-2006 would be quite a bit of fun. Also the awd system in those is simple and will work without issue as long as the fluids are new and clean.
