The Audi you are thinking of is probably the B5, and yes those engines have terrible timing chain issues, but the issue stems from the guides wearing and braking off, then blocking oil passages.

I would think a stock FA20 would get well over 100k miles(maybe 200k) before the timing chain would show any appreciable wear.

Well it is a timing belt, not belts so his assumption was actually somewhat accurate. Details are important to a story.

But yeah, the way these motors are going I highly doubt the chain will need to be replaced before the motor itself does. Im at 99.9k miles and am thinking I need to start saving for a new motor just in case.
