One would think, huh?

Actually the OEM cup holder is pretty inexpensive at mytoyotaparts.com and the fact that you can reposition it is a unique idea. I have the OEM arm rest and find that the cup holder works fine in the rear position when I need to grab lunch to go while I'm at work. Any other time I just use the door bottle holders.

That's easily fixed.

That's why the sliding USDM armrest is better than the flip up armrest. Also, it's higher, for those of us who are taller and don't want to drive leaning to the center of the car with our left wrist on the steering wheel and our baseball cap on backwards.

No, it's great, if this is the one we're talking about:

The flip up armrest looks a little better, but it can't match the sliding armrest in function. If you want to use the cupholder with the flip up armrest, you have to drive along with the flip up door open. The sliding armrest gives you better access to the cupholders when you need them and a reasonably high elbow rest when you need it. And it's $170-$180, depending on where you order it. (I don't know how much it costs to get it installed, since I installed mine myself. It does require the use of a rivet gun.)

It is a solid mount OEM part so gets attached right to the car. It has a slider track and that is what you rivet.

You could make that work, but it would be a huge pain in the ass. The center console is plastic that is rather soft. If you try to drive screws into that, it's not going to hold in place for very long. Instead you would have to use machine screws and take the center console completely out of the car to get nuts on the backs of the screws. Even then, leaning on the console over time would work the screws loose in the plastic, so that you'd have to take the console out again and tighten them.

You're that technically inept, but you think you're ready to drill holes in your center console and use screws instead?

Pop rivets are ridiculously easy to work with, even easier than using screws and nuts. Using screws would be a lot of extra work for inferior results. You can get a rivet gun at any hardware store. You just stick the rivet in the hole and squeeze the gun. Then you have a solid, permanent connection that isn't going to work loose over time. And you can do the whole thing without removing the center console from the car.

Here's a DIY thread, complete with video of the installation at the port. They use a heavy plastic template to drill the holes, but I used the paper template provided with a center punch and had no issues at all.

If that's too complicated for you, then you need to plan on paying someone else to install it for you. But that goes for any of the permanent armrests, since they all require drilling. Otherwise you're just stuck with the cheesy armrest that inserts into the cupholders and looks like it came from WalMart.

My arm rest is held on with screws. It has not worked loose and I don't believe it will. In this circumstance there will be no difference other than if you had to remove it the rivets will be a huge pain. Now if you remove the screws multiple times the holes will get enlarged and then rivets may become your only choice. I've found, attaching things permanently, no matter how much you believe they will never be removed, is unwise

Give it time.

Nonsense. Rivets are easy to remove. You just drill them out. It's at least as fast as removing screws, with the added bonus that you can remove them and replace them as many times as you need without enlarging the holes or stripping out threads.

The only reason anybody is questioning the use of rivets is that they have never used them. It's like someone insisting on using an axe to cut down a tree because they've never used a chain saw and think it would take too long.

Well, again, it's not permanent. But even if it were, you're talking about drilling holes in your center console before you even pick up the rivet gun. You're already making a permanent change that can't be rolled back. I don't see how that's any less "unwise" than going ahead and completing the installation properly.
