Worried about my clutch?

So I have recently done the Clutch Spring Removal, and adjusted the clutch pedal down a little. The thing is, my clutch still bites right at the top of the pedal?

Im just worried that I am damaging the clutch. There is no grinding, and no weird noises from what I can tell.

Any advice?

All will be fine. If you can't smell it then it isn't dragging. You will know without a doubt if it does.

Awesome! Im seriously in love with this car. Had it since last tuesday, and im over 900 miles already!

Are you sure you went the right way on the adjustment ..... ??

If you set the emergency, put it in 2nd gear, rev to about 2,000 rpm, then slowly let out the clutch ...... if that doesn't kill the engine, there is a good chance the clutch is out of adjustment or is wore out.

Lower it as low as you can making sure it still fully disengages, which usually is about even with the brake pedal, maybe a smidge lower.

Make damn sure the cruise cancel switch doesn't keep the master cylinder plunger from fully extending.

Get used to the fact that the clutch will always have a disturbingly high engagement point.

The 2nd gear thing did stall the car. My car has always bite at the top of the clutch. Should the engagement point change when adjusting the pedal?

No the point does not change. All you are doing is altering the length of the pedal throw before you hit the engage point not where the engage point is.

Gotcha. So since mine was at the top, i was really removing the dead space after the clutch is pushed in?

Thanks a ton man. I came from driving a 1993 325i, and every small noise or anything made me feel like it was about to blow up. Guess that philosophy has followed me to this car and made me paranoid.

OHHHH dude you need to get over that with these cars. You will hear all sort of weird shit! They strongly remind me of some of my early 60s cars in how noisy they are. Hell this is the first car I have had in decades where I can actually hear the gears meshing and the diff whining.


My philosophy with car noise is:


Did it start? Yes! Good.
Did it keep running? Yes! Good.
Did it move? Yes! Good.
Did it stop moving when I wanted it to? Yes! Good.
Did it have any weird smells or motions? No! Good.
Did a CEL come on? No! Good.
Did I notice any puddles of fluid on or under it? No! Good.
Did anybody flag me down and say "Dude your car is XXXX"? No! Good.


I have restored and drove old cars or just plain drove rust bucket beaters for many, many years and learned long ago that serious issues rarely give you warning with a noise. Yep, noisy brakes may mean get pads soon or a new whine may mean time for a replacement belt but if your engine, clutch or tranny are going to go they usually just do it and by the time you get any noise it is too late anyway.


Not saying don't pay attention to noises but unless they are in conjunction with one of the things in my list don't be paranoid of them either.
