Moton clubsport suspension

Thought there may be a few people interested in these and my experience with them although I appreciate they're not going to be a standard 'enthusiast' set up.

I've worked my way through six different suspension set ups including the Motons so I do have a few reference points for comparison. Nothing else has been in the Moton price range though.

So I was offered a deal which was too good to turn down on a set of Moton clubsport's.

They are fitted with Eibach race springs and AST topmounts. The current spring rate is 8kg front and 6kg rear although we're going to try some different springs to tailor them more to my requirements.

My previous set up were Tein Flex A's which I'd been very happy with and strongly believe to be easily the best budget coilover available on this platform. Here are a couple of pictures showing the difference between the front and rear Motons to the Teins.

Front

Rear

When I was looking into these I couldn't find any real information on them for this platform which is why I thought this thread might be useful. If anyone got any questions fire away and I'll do my best to answer. I'll also try and update with my experiences as I spend more time with them. The one thing I can say for sure even at this early stage is that the build quality of them is just another level.

Are the custom valved, or is there off the shelf valving?

At the moment these are off the shelf valveing but they are going to alter the valveing on the rear (and possibly the front) for how I use them when I'm in next week to try some different spring rates and have a look at moving the rear remote reservoirs into the trunk.

So I spent the day with Moton yesterday sorting out version two.

The springs were changed to softer and longer front and rear (5kg front and 3kg rear after having tried 5/4 too). The rear helper springs were also removed as they were unnecessary with the longer springs on the rear, they remained at the front though.

The rear compression damping was reduced and the gas pressure was set to suit the new setup front and rear.

This is a marked improvement in ride quality for UK roads and circuits such as the nurburgring with big bumps, dips and compressions.

The rear reservoirs were also moved to a more out of the way location to protect them from weather and road debris better. Sadly it wasn't possible to mount them in the boot as I'd hoped as the grommets for the abs cables are not big enough to allow the reservoir hoses through too (they are 30mm hoses plus fittings) and I didn't want holes drilled in the boot floor.

I am testing these for the next two weeks when I will have the chance to sample them on normal roads, motorways and also at Curborough before going back again for version three.

The plan for version three is to change the valving and piston to soften the dampers off and then possibly step back up on the spring rates as there remains a little 'bounce' in the ride. There is also a noise at the rear moton want to eliminate.

Great to see someone using proper suspensions. They are supposed to be very close to the JRZ RS Pro. As they were made by the "J" guy in JRZ.

Your springs are super soft. But for road and Nurburgring, why not.

I was very doubtful on the spring rates Moton wanted to try but the dampers can easily support even such a low rate and still easily support the car.

My car is nearly ready with the JRZ 12-32. I'll use the classic track spring rate (10f/12r).
I'll let you know how it works on the road.

All those dampers are supposed to be so good that you can get comfort with various spring rates.

And use hard spring low bare or soft spring hard bare.

Grabbed a picture of the new rear remote reservoir positioning:-

Should be nicely tucked out of the way.

I'm in the UK - the list was about £3.7k as they are with springs and topmounts.

Moton are trying the different spring rates, valving, etc for free as they want to get a good working set up for UK roads and track.

I really can't fault the service and help I've received from Moton UK.

Yes, that's the smart way to go. We have amazing suspensions manufacturers in Europe. The price are much better than in the US.

Any reason you've gone so much softer rear compared to front? Stock yours are 2.3k F and 3.3k R, I'd imagine with 5k F and 3k R it's very pushy?
