Header Wrapping? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Hey everyone,
I'm in the process of thermo-wrapping my headers, and am coming across some difficulties... I've gotten one corner done well, but the second corner (same side) I am having some "bulging" issues with the wrap. It is almost like the wrap is partially wrapping around itself/catching on itself/stretched out too far/pulled too tight but from what I can tell I am using the same serpentine rotation as before. I am using 1in wrap on the runners to just beyond the first bend, and 2in wrap after up to the cat. I've already done the overpipe, and one corner, and didn't see this bunching up issue.
I don't have any pictures of it, since I was too busy swearing at it and being frustrated (sorry!)... I will take some tomorrow, as I will likely still be having the same problem.

Using water to wrap it wet helps the wrap be a bit more compliant.

The type of wrap you're using makes a big difference as BRZHarley mentioned.

Using LEDAUT multi-purpose

I've been moistening the ends of the wrap to get it started. I'm on my way to work now, but I'll post pictures tonight.

Thanks for the interest on this guys... I solved the issue by using a new roll of wrap. I am guessing that the material was too stretched out when I put the wrapped the first corner, but with a new roll of material it was a-ok. I think I can de-stress the weave enough to use the remainder of both rolls on the other side. Finished pics will be around in a week or so =D

Next time, dip all the wrap in a bucket of water before starting. It'll prevent the fiber crap from getting all over you and all over the place in general. Also makes the wrap cooperate much much more.

Some people say this is a bad idea, blah blah. Once you start the car and let it idle, it all burns off. So... yeah.

Enjoy the lower temps and more heat scavenging.

More or less what I was going for. Second half will be soaked for a bit, and since my roommate got a cat recently, we have a few squirt bottles lying around... new header is stainless, so a little spritz to help get everything snug into place won't hurt.

No. Once you start the car the water is going to be cooked off basicslly.
