My dad was an architectural engineer and designed bridges in CA San Diego and Canada etc... In my opinion calculate an even balance of strength you need to carry a balanced amount of weight then total the weight and total the strength you need. Based off the diameter I would probably make it look like this but this is lower than tenfeet so the taller it is the more equal height of pillars I would add to match it. Balance and extra safety procedures is the key here

Spa way to go. Nice sweat when it's cold as heck or raining.

Yikes, okay, maybe it was a strong claim. All I meant was he would have a pretty good guess, being a project manager that contracts work on a daily basis for all sorts of jobs. He manages million dollar projects for Toyota to figure out where to put what how. He's also built a few decks and has experience in construction, so all I meant was that if anyone could give a decent guess, it would be my dad. Then again, he likes to make shit up so he probably would calculate a completely fictional load bearing capacity. All that being said, his answer would probably still reflect a lot of what has already been said. This deck wouldn't support that kind of weight.

I have been in Toyota plants and placing machines on 30 year old wooden decks is a real possibility!

Well, I haven't gotten my son-in-law over here for his input, yet.
A part of my research indicates that my (2) 4"x8" uprights plus (2) 2'x4" up rights, at their max, could support 24,000 pounds. Even with a 50% margin ....... that would be 12,000 pounds. (the pool would weigh 8,000 pounds + 2,000 pounds of supporting rafters and decking.) However, like @Tcoat cautions ........ the deck is 30 years old ...... spending its life in a wet climate. So, the common since part of me looks up at that deck and says - no way am I going to put 4 tons up there ....... ![]() But then again ....... just how many tons of hay did we stack in the hay lofts of old barns with hand hewn, pegged together timbers ....... hmmmmmm ?????????????? humfrz |
