It looks like an exercise machine. There are lots of in-between devices available or you can make your own.

The closest one I found online cost $1700. I can build it for about $200 with all attachments. Space is a big deal for me so multiple devices isn't an option

No, I mean there are lots of linear bearing-type devices. The difference between $5 and $50 is housing and tolerance.

So being in IT pulls off again!
Getting rid of shitty, overpriced Comcast (finally) and going for a little less shitty, little less overpriced Centurylink. Apparently, they installed fiber lines a few months back in my neighborhood providing FTTH. It was tempting but at ~1400/year, and never going to fully utilize that 1 gig connection, bit too overkill and costly for me. Settled for 100Mbps in the end, which is still an upgrade from current 3 down and 1 up bullshit from Shitcast. Wish my parents told me what they were paying much earlier... Anyhoo, they were trying to get a tech to set everything up for me/family at 70 dollar installation cost plus 100 dollar modem purchase and I had to pull the "yo, I work in IT as a system engineer. Also got network certifications, pretty sure I can run simple cables from the modem to computer along with setting up wireless access. Also looked at your approved modem list." card I guess in the end, they have to grab the fiber lines and run it to the outside of my house and knocked it down to 10 dollars. tl;dr I am now living in 2016 instead of early to mid 2000's

And this guy insisted he had to "finish the installation on my computer". He wouldn't leave. So here's what happened: Me: Which computer? I have a whole bunch. Him: Uhm...ah... that one? (pointing at my tower workstation) Me: You sure you know what you're doing? That's my baby. Him: Of course sir, I'm a professional. So I turn the thing on and choose Red Hat from the boot menu. He doesn't seem to notice. I make him brag about his training while the machine boots up. I log on as a guest user and give him the chair. He sits down, grabs the mouse and stares at the screen for two minutes. Him: What's this? Me: You're holding a mouse and you're looking at a monitor. Him: Is this a Mac? Me: No. It's a workstation running Red Hat Linux. I thought you said you were a professional? Him: I only have software for Mac and Windows! Me: That's too bad. I'm sure we can make do without your software, though. Him: No, that won't work. Me: So your internet doesn't work on Linux? What kind of crap is this? I want my money back! Him: I'll have to call my boss. So he gets up, and while he's having a fun conversation on the phone I quickly set up the network for the new modem. Him: My boss says it won't work if you don't have Mac or Windows. Me: It works just fine. Thank you for all your help. We're done here. He looks at my open browser with a news site, takes his stuff and leaves without another word. TL;DR: I'm an asshole. |
