Being able to stop fast is just as important as being able to go fast. They are two independent measures of performance unrelated to each other. My car is bone stock and I know it can do at least 137mph. I would love to have Brembos. I had Brembos in my WRX. There was a REAL HARD stop on I84W in Waterbury. Like 50mph traffic to 0. Don't know why. I stopped a foot behind a Toyota Camry. The pickup truck behind me hit me, he was paying attention his truck just couldn't stop as hard as I could. Then all 3 of us got nailed by some broad in an Altima at 50mph who wasn't paying attention and totalled my WRX even though she hit the truck behind me. So maybe my brakes were too good, haha, but at least I wasn't found at fault...

Not sure if missed sarcasm, or saw sarcasm, but decided it still merited a proper response (Which is something I do all the time, often earning me a sigh and, "I was joking." as a response.)

So was I, lol. I stopped a foot behind the Camry and I was like PHEW that was close... then I saw the pickup in my rearview and I was like, yeah.. he's not going to stop in time. The worst part was it was in construction zone with jersey dividers (those moveable [by crane] concrete wall things for you Canadian readers) on both sides and traffic in both lanes. I was a sitting duck, nothing I could do but watch my baby get destroyed.

I thought the purpose of a BBK was more for heat management rather than stopping faster?

You can lock up your wheels with the stock brakes...

Well stopping faster works better when you keep the brakes cool. If they heat up too much you can warp rotors permanently or even loose you ability to stop at all temporaily with enough heat.

Plus larger friction surface area gives more area for the pads to grip. So its really two-fold.

Well yeah, but I was going off the scenario of stopping once on a highway and getting rear ended.

They were about double the size of my original brakes. It was unreal how much better they were at stopping the car. If I had the stock brakes maybe I would have hit the Camry, it's hard to say.

My tires we also 18" and wider so the BBK was appropriate since I had more surface area of rubber to handle it. But just the rotors themselves can produce resistance. So even if you can lock up (or activate ABS) on stock tires it doesn't completely negate a BBK.

All OEM brakes on all cars work equally well for stopping in your normal driving and there is no advantage given by bigger brakes. As has been said in many threads your tires will lose grip before you max out the ability of even OEM brakes. That is why anti lock was invented. In your scenario you would have stopped in exactly the same distance even on stock brakes. It is easy to say.
Now, if you had done 100 sudden stops and heated them up nicely before that emergency then ya the bigger brakes could have stopped you shorter. Not because they had more surface but because they could deal with the heat better.
