Moving to Seattle: Do I need a front license plate?

Hey guys/gals!

I'm new here, and just recently bought a 2013 FR-S. I'm moving from Louisville, KY to the Seattle/Kent area of Washington.

There is no front license plate on the vehicle in its current state, as Kentucky does not require it. I was looking at the law to decide if I need to get a front plate or not.

I'm sure this will be a simple answer for you all.

(5)(a) Display. License plates must be:
(i) Attached conspicuously at the front and rear of each vehicle if two license plates have been issued;
(ii) Attached to the rear of the vehicle if one license plate has been issued;
(iii) Kept clean and be able to be plainly seen and read at all times; and
(iv) Attached in a horizontal position at a distance of not more than four feet from the ground.
(b) The Washington state patrol may grant exceptions to this subsection if the body construction of the vehicle makes compliance with this section impossible.

I asked Washington state trooper this for years ago. His response was your issued two license plates and you need to display them both

I feel like you're kinda going to be in a grey away. Washington issues and requires two plates, but you're from out of state and were only issued one. Cops can be real ****s around here, especially Washington State Patrol. So you might want to get the front plate just to be safe.

That's what I was thinking. I'm hoping I can get my Kentucky plate before I make the move. At least I'll be scott-free for the short term with that.

Now to figure out the best means for mounting a front plate...

Once you register your vehicle in Washington State, then by law yes.

Also, you have 30 days to get a drivers license and register your vehicle in Washington.

Will a cop pull you over for not running a front plate? Chances are no, but it's not unheard of.

Thanks for the heads up. I'd rather not have to deal with the headache.

If you don't want holes in your front bumper http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/grim...l#.V17c4bsrKUk

It's pretty nice in a BRZ with the black tow hook cover, I just drilled a elongated hole in and looks pretty slick.

I would be a little more hesitant to drill a hole in the FRS tow hook cover since it's paint matched.

one other thing to consider is running an out of state plate makes you 10x more likely to be pulled over late at night.

I haven't had a problem with any of my cars in 7 years without a front plate.
Don't drive like a jerk and cops won't bother you.

you're just lucky, i've seen several friends get pulled over while driving the speed limit because they lacked a front plate. it just depends on the cop.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm just going to purchase on of the plate holders that mounts to the tow hook.

I'm pumped to make the move out west for my job and hopefully I can meet up with some people at a few meets...assuming you guys do haha

I personally live in Northern Seattle, and I don't have a front license plate on mine and never have until I drive up to Canada. So if you want to run one without a front license plate you can, but to be safe ride with one.
