That is personal "miss" on the design of the car. My '04 Suburban and MomHawk's '05 Mustang provides way more useful information via their one or two line console, not to mention being able to program simple things like the lock "beep" without having to pay the dealer some huge fee.

Maybe they just read stuff of their consoles.

It might be that modern cars tell you too many things and you spend time looking at your consoles, displays and gauges instead of on the road outside.

I once got a Prius as a loaner, and it had a cute animation on the dashboard showing energy flow between wheels, gas motor, electric motor and battery at the moment.

It was captivating. I don't know how I did not crash.

My Lancers had a big mothering display that would tell you just about anything right up to the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow (both African AND European) except for things that you really needed to know. Both oil and coolent temperatures were still just idiot lights. Display sure was purdy though.

03 Rally Edition - Good little car. No display yet. Still going strong with a guy down the street even though pushing 600K miles.

08 GTS - Freakin' great car! I know this is mostly a RWD yo, Subie rules forum but it really was a great car. Display only in red (like every other light on the dash, controls and HU) informative if you needed to know the variance between the outside and inside temperature of the car, how many miles you could go on what gas you had, if all your doors were closed or if a bridge keeper ever asked you the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow but no real important info. At least being red it was not all that obtrusive and it was sort of cool but not monumental.

12 GT - Biggest piece of crap ever constructed and a major scam in Canada. Same display as the 08 but now in eye searing bright multi colour. No two sections of the dash had the same colour lights and there were so many bright flashing screens that you felt like you were driving on the Vegas strip. I despised that damned display.

Let me clarify .

The Prius wasn't captivating. At all. Nor was it cute. There was little energy in the car. I wanted to taste that famous electric torque, but whenever I tried to get any torque out of that Prius, the electric system was overwhelmed and the car switch to gas motor. The car felt both heavy AND underpowered AND undertorqued.

Also, it pissed me off because it had foot-operated parking brake and I spend 5 minutes (feeling like an idiot) trying to find it, before I drove off.

It was the display that showed energy flow, and it was really captivating to see all these arrows moving and reversing direction depending on what I did to the car.

Honestly, I wasn't even thinking about using it while driving so much as the ability to retrieve the information and adjust settings when you want to. I agree there is a fine line between information and too much of a good thing, and the car manufacturers can't seem to get it right.

Just look at the Pioneer OEM headunit in the FRS, with GPS. It has some absurd algorithm that says it's OK for me to try to talk to it when driving, or pick from its internal list, but I can't pick an address from my phone address book on screen. I have to pick up my phone, look up the address, then "read" it to the GPS and probably be routed to Nome, AK when I want to go to Rome, GA.

Erm.... I don't know what to say... I can see the theme for odd colour displays.. the BRZ standard radio is green when all else is orange and I'm assuming your Scion is the same.

The Scion touchscreen one is very colorful but at least it is off to the side. The Lancer display was right there in your face, front and center and was a distraction especially driving in the dark. I really like the lack of big, virtually useless displays on the FRS.

The ugly stock Fujitsu headunit here has a night mode that's tied to the headlight switch, and can be untied in the options menu.

Old VW Blaupunkt MFD2 was the best 2D GPS I've ever used, had night mode and came with classy British accent voice option lol!

I can't stand the stock unit, I never turn it on. I want to upgrade but don't use the car much to justify the spend.
