Western marketers will never allow a model to go on sale with better bits than their flagship offerings.

Subaru of America has never in its history offered a better equipped variant for the same model year than their counterparts in Japan.

That's kinda my conclusion after looking at the pix in my Subaru and STI history books from Miki Press.

Subaru's 2017 BRZ features better performance, more aggressive styling, more features and an all-new track mode that's sure to offer enthusiasts a superior overall driving experience.

In terms of performance, the 2017 BRZ boasts updated coil springs and dampers, as well as a larger rear stabilizer bar. Further reinforcements were made to the chassis by modifying the strut tower braces, transmission cross-member plate and the rear wheel housings in order to increase the car's rigidity.

For improved handling, the stability control system thresholds were raised, resulting in a dramatic change to the car's behavior - so much so that Subaru changed 'Sport' mode into 'Track' mode.

As for the 2.0-liter boxer engine, it now has new valves, camshaft and cylinder heads to go with its new aluminum intake manifold and redesigned exhaust manifold. The result is a slight increase in power to 205 HP and 156 lb-ft (211 Nm) of torque and better acceleration on 6-speed manual transmission models thanks to the new lower final drive ration (from 4.1 to 4.3:1).

Customers craving more can opt for the Performance Package, available on Limited spec versions. It includes Brembo calipers and larger rotors on both front and rear brakes, giving drivers a sizable boost in terms of stopping power, fade resistance and pedal feel. Also included in the package are the SACHS Performance shock absorbers and the unique 17" black aluminum wheels.

Styling-wise, the 2017 BRZ presents a redesigned front bumper, upgraded "Kono-Ji" style LED headlights, standard DRLs on all trims, LED fog lights, body-colored rear spoiler, full-LED taillights plus the new 10-spoke 17" alloys available on the two spec versions (Premium and Limited).

Inside, the Limited model comes with a 4.2" LCD multifunction display (6.2" on Premium spec), providing the driver with information such as lateral Gs, accelerator pedal position, braking force, steering angle, oil and water temperature, plus battery voltage and an integrated stop watch for recording your lap time whenever you find yourself on a race track. Also, those who prefer the automatic transmission will get to shift gears via the paddle shift controls. More subtle interior upgrades include the wrapped meter visor, updated HVAC control panel and "BRZ" embroidered in red on the front seats.

With Subaru Starlink smartphone integration and apps such as iHeart Radio and Stitcher, the 2017 BRZ is a well-connected car. It's also comes with Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and audio streaming, plus SiriusXM Satellite Radio, TravelLink and a handy Rear vision camera.

The 2017 Subaru BRZ is due to arrive at retailers in early September, though customers will need to wait until winter 2017 until the Limited version with the Performance Package arrives.

From Motor Authority (http://www.motorauthority.com...ru-brz-preview):

Quote:
Subaru’s BRZ has received its most significant update since launching on the market as a 2013 model. The update mirrors similar changes made to Toyota’s version of the car, the 86 (formerly a Scion FR-S). Both updated sports cars go on sale later this year as 2017 models.

It’s easy to spot the updated BRZ by its new front bumper which appears wider than before and has been positioned lower for improved aerodynamics. The headlights are now full-LED units, a first for Subaru, and integrate the car’s daytime running lights.

Other visual cues include a standard rear spoiler, full-LED taillights, and new wheel patterns. The available fog lights have also been converted to LEDs.

There aren’t as many changes in the cabin. All BRZs get a redesigned leather-wrapped steering wheel while the range-topping Limited trim receives a wrapped instrument cluster hood, “BRZ” embroidered on the seats, and a 4.2-inch display in the instrument cluster that provides the driver with info such as lateral gs, accelerator pedal position, braking force, steering angle, oil and water temperature, and battery voltage. There’s also a stop watch feature for recording lap times.

Unfortunately, you won’t be setting any quick times as the 2017 BRZ, like its 2017 86 corporate cousin, remains down on power. The 2.0-liter flat-4 engine sees output rise to 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque, up from 200 hp and 151 lb-ft previously. A 6-speed manual remains standard while a 6-speed automatic is available.

Other performance tweaks include revised coil spring and damper settings plus a larger rear stabilizer bar. Several other reinforcements to the chassis were made and the final drive ratio changed from 4.1:1 to 4.3:1. Subaru says the thresholds of the stability control system were also raised, resulting in the decision to rename the previous Sport mode to Track mode, and there’s now a hill start assist feature standard across the range.

Those seeking more performance will be able to opt for a new Performance Package, though unfortunately it’s only offered on cars equipped with a manual transmission and Limited trim. It includes beefed up Brembo brakes, Sachs shock absorbers, and unique 17-inch alloys finished in black.

The 2017 Subaru BRZ hits showrooms in early September, though buyers looking to add the Performance Package will have to wait until early next year. Pricing hasn’t been announced but shouldn’t deviate much from the $26,190 starting price of the 2016 model.

For more on the Subaru BRZ, read the in-depth reviews over at The Car Connection.

I quoted it in the updated GT86 thread, but anyone else think that the change from "Sport" to "Track" will lead to Subaru having a whole new excuse to deny warranty claims?

That said, I think the refresh looks good.

Now people can get some bling by ordering the Brembo stuff from the dealer parts counter, at least the brake bias should be proper.

The lawyers probably made the button label change. If someone pushed the button and crashed on the streets, probably can't sue the manufacturer cuz the button explicitly reads "Track".
