It's near a kinda far away IAF (initial approach fix) for the approach into Brainard airport in Hartford. It's only really used when there is a high traffic load and they can't vector you directly onto final.

So yes, an approach I guess to be fair to your question. We practice it more for the sake of practice though than its used practically, lol.

It's still practical to use it for practice. We used to bust out the sextant for the same reason.
