Everyone else on the roads drove like shrivelled old spinsters. It took me a decade of driving, and several banged up cars, to realize

1. I had (surprisingly) improved my driving skills immensely over the years.

2. I still had a lot to learn and would never be a racing talent.

3. Rally champions don't go flat out and sideways around corners on the way to the grocery store. Only stupid assholes like me do that.

Everyone else still drives like shrivelled old spinsters, though.

Allow me to brag on @soulreapersteve a bit. He is every bit as thoughtful as you observe AND he's no slouch when it comes to stretching his legs. Like you, I'm one of those stupid assholes. I just need to go to the track more often to get it out of my system.

Steve really sets the bar for the balance between responsible yet fun. I'd be honoured to let him set pace for me anytime.

Back in the early 90's, a buddy of mine and I test-drove an early 70's Fiat X1/9 with radials on the front and bias plies on the rear. That's the way to get a 63hp, 1.3l car to drift!

As an added bonus, we removed the targa roof panel but thought it was supposed to fit behind the seats. (We found out later that it was actually designed to fit in the front trunk). We drove around - squealing and sideways - with the roof sticking up out of the car, blocking the rear view mirror. Strangely the car dealer was unimpressed with us.

Oh man, I wish. That thing is awesome. I've watched that video a bunch of times. Always makes me want to buy another X1/9 and a Hayabusa. Now that's the 1.3l the X1/9 SHOULD have come with.
