i test drove both, and found the auto to be sluggish. in fairness though, i am not familiar with paddle shifters.
i also don't think you would be at risk to "destroy" your clutch. i have never really heard of anyone taking more than 2 weeks to learn manual and be comfortable with it |

Yes I have driven both an auto and a manual. I personally DO NOT like auto. I think it's boring and sluggish. I FEEL like this car is awesome in a manual but each person has a diff mindset. Just my 2 cents.

I wouldn't worry about learning how to drive a manual transmission. Most people can get a car moving from A to B within a day, and are comfortable with their commute within a week, maybe two at the most.
Between the BRZ having one of the easiest manuals to learn on, and the automatic slowing down a car that is already not super quick to begin with, I can't see all that many reasons to pick the automatic transmission if fear of the unknown is the only thing holding you back. There are two situations that I would find annoying if I faced them every day. The first is a long, uphill creep as some posters have already noted (this applies to some multi-level parking structures too). The other is having to parallel park while facing downhill (although this might be slightly easier with the facelifted cars that have backup camera). I've read before the FR-S sales are split roughly 50/50 between manual and auto, but BRZ sales are closer to 80/20 in favour of manual. My theory is that this is because the BRZ has an older demographic, and thus has a wider audience which has been exposed to manual transmissions. |

I drive in the city every day with a manual transmission FR-S.
Due to the light clutch, it's not the chore it would be in some other cars. |
