Ford is capable but they put some crappy bits on their mass market vehicles sometimes.

Seen a ton of bad posts about the mustang chinese transmission MT82. Other quality faults like that as well, but that stands out in my mind.

Also my friend has a 2001 focus and every suspension part on it broke in about 120,000 miles. And let me tell you this guy is the opposite of a spirited driver. He doesn't care about cars except A to B. I'd have blamed lack of maintenance on his failures but there is no maintenance on those parts. And all of them failed. lol. Ball joints, bushings, shocks.

After the introductions of the base sixth-gen Camaros and recently, the high-po ZL1s, what’s missing from Chevy’s renewed pony car range is the more extreme Z/28 replacement, and we think this is it.

To be precise, we believe that this bad-ass Camaro tester with the huge rear wing that we spied lapping the Nürburgring today is the Trans Am Camaro Z/28 that General Motors product chief Mark Reuss hinted at last year.

Chevy’s original Trans Am car from the late 1960s was a special version of the Z/28 with a unique 302 cubic inch (approx. 5.0-liters) small-block V8 developed specifically to homologate the new Camaro for SCCA’s popular Trans-Am road-racing series. Only 602 examples were built in 1967.

Speaking to Autonews last year, Reuss said that Chevy is studying a rebirth of the car. "We're looking at the original formulas of the Trans Am homologation of the Z/28," he said."Why was the 302 engine so special? So, the formula may change a little, but it still needs to be a wicked fast track car more capable maybe than the comfort- and driver-oriented models."

This narrative fits with what we’re seeing here in these spy shots, as the camouflaged prototype looks like a dialed up 2017 Camaro ZL1 with a more extreme body kit that includes front bumper corner canards and a deeper lip spoiler, a much bigger rear wing and different wheels hiding larger brake discs.

Undoubtedly, such a hardcore model would come with weight saving measures over the already lighter 2016 Camaro – the previous 5th gen Camaro Z/28 was 100 pounds (45 kilograms) lighter than the naturally aspirated Camaro SS and 300 pounds (136 kilograms) lighter than the Camaro ZL1.

What will power the next Z/28 is a big unknown at this point other than it will be a V8 engine. The previous Z/28 used a naturally-aspirated 7.0-liter LS7 V8 rated for 505hp 481 lb-ft of torque (652 Nm) which helped it record a faster Nürburgring lap than the Lexus LFA and Lamborghini Murcielago at 7:37.47. It’s very likely that Chevy will keep the Z/28 naturally-aspirated to further differentiate it from the new ZL1 that borrows the Corvette Z06’s 640hp (477 kW) and 640 lb-ft of torque (868 Nm) supercharged 6.2-liter V8 LT4.

If the ZL1 is meant to give those snobby Europeans a run for their money, its bigger brother will scare the hell out of them.

The upcoming Z28 that’s being rigorously tested at the Nürburgring is a testosterone-infused version of the current top Camaro.

Not that the latter (that can also be spotted in the video) is for the faint-hearted, what with its Vette Z06-sourced, 640 HP V8, gapping grille, bulging hood, flared arches and rear wing, but this is bound to be even more special.

GM engineers could have saved themselves some work by ditching the camo, for it simply fails to hide the wide canards, lower splitter and reshaped side air intakes on the front bumper – and then, of course, there’s that much larger wing at the back and wider black wheels and rubber that can hardly be contained by the rear wings and lower suspension.

The Z/28 won't pack more firepower than the ZL1, but it will compensate for that with a lighter body and track-focused handling. Refreshingly enough, forced induction is almost definitely off the menu like in its predecessor and the way this test car sounds reinforces this view. The cylinder count will remain the same, but instead of tweaking the LT4, Chevrolet could shoehorn a large displacement V8 in the engine bay.

Beating the previous Z/28's 4.0-second 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint won’t be an issue. Nor should handling, thanks to an even sharper Magnetic Ride suspension and the Performance Traction Management, electronic limited-slip differential, Custom Launch Control and Driver Mode Selector from the lesser Camaro. A stringent diet should help, too, and would prove more than useful on the track.

Speaking of which, the previous Z/28 beat some formidable, and seriously more expensive, opponents like the Lexus LFA and Lamborghini Murcielago around the Nordschleife. It will be interesting to see what kind of precious metal the brand-new one might humble this time.

New Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 To Use Naturally Aspirated 7.0-Liter V8

The next track-focused iteration of the Camaro is reportedly going to stick with naturally aspirated V8 power.

We’ve already seen and heard a very aggressive-looking prototype being driven around the Nurburgring, which eventually crashed onto the barriers. You don’t need a trained set of ears to understand that there is a naturally aspirated V8 breathing under there.

Motortrend has connected the dots for everyone to answer which powertrain is eventually going to power the new Z/28 and their answer is an updated version of the 7.0-litre V8 that powered the previous generation too.

It all makes sense: GM wants the car to remain naturally aspirated and to be special enough to take on the Ford Mustang GT350R. Power will be slightly increased from the 505hp it made for the last Z/28 to the region of 540 to 565hp, according to MT. This shall position the new car comfortably under the ZL1 and offer more horses than the GT350R.

Sources from Chevrolet have also said in the past that the 7.0-litre V8 will appear in one of their future cars, and if you think about it, the only model that makes sense using this engine is the next Z/28. The updated version of the LS7 engine could even switch its code name to LT7 to point out the technical differences in their new-gen track weapon.

It's not worse, but it's only marginally better, and that only to the front. In other words: it blows.

Test drove this for quite a while, the SS model - great engine sound, loved the rev-matching on the manual (wish they put that into the BRZ refresh!). But the car is HUUUGE, way too big and heavy to feel agile. No thanks.

Just a quick follow up to this, curiosity go the better of me and I went to a local dealer to check out a black 2SS. Car looks better in pictures to me than real life - sits way up high (of course my FR-S is lowered ). Sat inside, wow for such a big car it feels awfully cramped. The roof line is low (I'm 6'2") and overall the cabin feels far less roomy than my tiny FR-S! Same goes for the rear seats, maybe a smidge more leg room, but we're talking about 0" leg room vs 1" leg room. Neither is useable for my kids to put their legs down (they sit criss-cross just fine in the back) - so no advantage their. The trunk is weird, it's a big hole - pain if you have anything heavy or bulky to put in the back. I didn't drive it though - so I'm probably missing out on the "good stuff" but I'm really suprised - I was expecting more room.

The twins have their issues for sure, but it just goes to show how well thought out our cars are regarding space usage, visibility, etc. We have cars that are the size of a Cayman, but with rear seats that are actually useable by my kids and a relatively useable trunk! And it weighs about 1000lbs less than the Camaro.

I'm sure the Camaro's power is a hoot though

A lot of people talking crap about the Camaro in here, seem to be completely unaware that it now handles as well as a BMW M3.
