I would not have guessed that
Like you said, I guess the dealer should know; It would be extremely disappointing if it's only covered for the FR-S

I have a 2013 FR-S with 47,500 miles. No modifications, original owner, automatic, daily driver, garage kept, occasional autocross and track day use. Got the CEL/SL but never had any idle issues. Code was a P0018 and the dealer tried re-programming my existing ECU first. That didn't work, so I have a new ECU under warranty. Car ran fine on my drive home. Hopefully that trend continues.

And just to update my situation: I received my car back in working order a few days past three weeks after dropping it off at the dealership. They first replaced my ECU which resulted in engine knock. They then had a new short block machined and delivered and installed during the third week. They said a cam gear (does this have to do with the VVT gear as well? they said the VVT was an issue) was messed up as well (which was replaced with the short block install). So far, so good, about 300 miles since the repair.

Another new one to list. 33k 2013 BRZ, owned since new and never any problems. Got a CEL/slip light this afternoon. Took it into the dealership. They put in a new VVT oil control valve, I'm assuming this is the VVT sensor? Also reprogrammed my ECU. The car seemed to be running fine after the lights came on, no limp mode. I really hope this is the end of it and not have to worry about it anymore.

Started to drive home from work, CEL/slip is back on. Going to talk to dealership in the morning. Stayed off for about 10 miles.
Edit: Replacing Cam Sprocket. I highly doubt this is the end of this. Has anyone actually had their car fixed in this thread from a small fix like this? Seems like most of them are lemon law'd or engine rebuilt after a long ass process of back and forth. Last edited by oldlostcory; 04-22-2016 at 04:59 PM. |

Are they performing all the work under warranty? Do you still have bumper to bumper or powertrain only?

If they fix it and it goes away I'll keep the car. If the issue comes back again in like 10k miles like some have said, I think I'm going to move on to something else sadly. |

Had p0018 confirmed after CEL/Slip/No Cruise, AC.
Dealer Replaced in this order, Oil Control Valve, Cam Sprocket Gear (Associated with p0018) and then the ECU. CEL came on after each repair and stayed and has stayed off after the ecu replacement. All was covered under power-train warranty. Also, Toyota (if you have FRS as opposed to BRZ) has a policy where you get a free rental for any warrantied repair which takes longer than a day. (FYI) Was having hunting idle previous to repair as well (didn't see it as a problem) and this has since disappeared. 39K miles and no previous issues (2013 FRS) I will also add I gave the dealer the Subaru TSB as they didn't have it. While the service reps didn't KNOW if and when the fixes would work, it does appear that Toyota had instructions as to how to attack the problem. It would seem that regardless of whether or not they admit it, they know it is a problem, and will fix it quietly when it happens. |

Finally got my car back. The code it was giving was P0018A. It was a bit of a headache. The ended up replacing the ECM as well. Then during their test drive the serpentine belt came off because one of the techs didn't put it on correctly. They replaced that and had me come get it. Well they also told me they filled it up for me. Turns out they filled it up with 87. I made the drain it and fill it back up with 93.
I was getting a slight surge after releasing the gas before they did all this. I think it may be gone now. Need to drive a bit more to be sure. |
