Here's a big shout out to all those living the contractor life.

Showed up on site at 710 to meet with the client at 730. Due to circumstances that were not ever told to us, we are unable to complete the work now until early May. Something about needing a supervisor from our company who is certified as such from the company we're doing work for, or to have an employee of said company watching us work.

Well, since we've elected to complete the work at a later date, I need to pull our equipment from their cathodic protection systems. This also needs to be supervised by the company who contracted us. Apparently they need to lock out the AC side of things, while I work on the de-energized DC side of things. So, I'm now sitting in my truck (and have been since just after 745) until 1230 so that I can do the work. Sometimes I think we're going overboard with the safety stuff.

Ah well, least I'm paid by the hour.

This is beyond extreme. You can isolate the DC side by turning the rectifier off, and it's such a low voltage on the AC side that you'd find far more stray AC due to something such as TTC. We're talking less than 2 volts here. Not to mention, I don't even need to touch any wires for 4/5 of these things that I have to remove. It's just an unnecessary inconvenience. I'm a journeyman (only in the good ol Wild Wild West (Alberta) though) for this stuff. It ain't rocket science and all the safety precautions are well taken care of before I touch anything.

But hey, if they want to waste time and money, that's fine. All they're doing is keeping me from getting home, going to the brewery for the weekends beer, and getting dinner on the go. At least I have this coming weekend off!

Pro-tip for those who work with electricity:

Kink the wire like a garden hose to stop the flow of electricity, eliminating the need for a LOTO.

Second pro-tip: don't say this to a safety guy, or else he'll give you a death stare, call your boss and tell him "certain employees need to be more educated when they come to our sites". Safety people don't like jokes.

Also, @Tcoat, while I understand that safety stuff is very important, common sense should prevail in most situations. But I've also noticed common sense is no where near common. I took a 20V shock on a pipeline that had near 240V of induced AC on it. I got lucky as fuck that I was wearing my proper* PPE and was standing in water, which happens to be an amazing isolator. Complacency can kill, and that was an excellent low risk wake up call, due to my company's amazing engineering staff who have near perfected AC reduction in metallic structures.

*Green triangle boots, no high voltage gloves though.

For a short time I worked on boats as an engineer and we used to tell the deckhands shit like this all the time. The guy I worked with got his ass reamed out by the company owner for a similar prank and the phrase our boss used was: "One of the fucktards you told that to is probably going to believe you and get himself killed. I'm all for getting rid of idiots but this is not the way to go about it"

DEATH STARE
And you have no idea how many "certain employees" do indeed need more training before they can work on our sites.

So, remember when I was talking about engine swapping a Ferrari? Here's a prime candidate and I bet no one would even care.

I don't exactly understand why you'd want to engine swap a classic... If it were me I'd try to keep it all original.

I have made a very good living for the last 30 years and it was all based on the total lack of common sense from the people you would expect it from the most!

I try to keep stuff light and easy going, otherwise it's easy to have your morale fall to dangerous levels. Very hard to stay sane while pulling 14 hour shifts 1000's of km away from home for 24 days straight. My grades on industry related courses speak for them self, thankfully, so my boss didn't get too upset. I did get a phone call from him and was just reminded to keep it to a "yes sir, no sir, 3 bags full sir" when dealing with people who aren't familiar with us.

Similar to me making a very good living the past 30 years in tech because people won't read manuals....
