For the same reason they hide vin numbers in pics. They think people can use it. The fact that both your VIN and plate are totally visible on the street, at meets and anyplace else you drive the car seems to escape them.

Soldiers don't carry weapons anymore. They get issued out when the shooting starts. Might be different over seas but at domestic bases only MPs get weapons. Last I heard
