Why wouldn't they be? Probably the least of the concerns on here. Just no drinking and driving stories I would guess.

Went to baseball game, skipped dinner (had a hotdog, but that's it), drank heavily, woke up dead.

My life is no longer exciting.

You bastards aren't even in the playoffs... now we have to hope one of the other teams losses all their games.

I can't figure out why, with as outlandish and open-minded as their theories always seem to be scientists assume alien life is going to be the same as us. They look for planets in the goldilock zone, not too hot, not too cold, with liquid water and a similar atmosphere to ours. They think this stuff is the basis for all potential life. But who's to say an alien couldn't have developed on a planet with a daily temperature over 500 degrees, an alien that drinks acid instead of water?

Because they are guessing based on what they know for the most likely place. Until we find the first ETs we have no idea what life is like elsewhere. You're right though, I personally think we are probably the only assholes living on the surface of a planet. (Or very rare anyway). I mean what are the odds of it being habitible above ground with enough rads to be warm but no too many to fry us, probably slim.

Well since I posted I started googling and discovered the assumption is based on the fact that no other elements can support the complex molecular structure required for life. The only other element that might be able to do it is silicon, but even that's extremely unlikely because of the challenges levied against it. But again, I take issue with this because the scientists are assuming all the elements on Earth are all the elements that exist anywhere. There could be an entirely different periodic table hiding somewhere out there.

Not a good assumption. We have zero clue on what can do what under what conditions.
We add new materials to the periodic table all the time. We may have discover.0000000000001% of what exists for all we know.

Exactly my point. They're assuming only carbon-based life can exist and that's what they're looking for. Life could be literally anything. But, the universe is big, so I get why they have to narrow the search down to what we know. It would be even more impossible to find aliens if we tried to look for everything. They have to look for carbon life because they don't have the means to detect something else.
