Honestly a lot more "older" (35+) folks driving this car as I thought there would be.

I'm only 34 but I think the reason for this is because when you're still in school or just out of school, you tend to think "I want an awesome car." This leads to people buying cars and getting buried in debt.

When you get older, you tend to think "I want to have fun." At this point in life, you've kinda made your bones, carved out a niche and starting to get to enjoy your hard earned money.

Again, all of the above is an unfair generalization but that's the gist.

You generalized yes but hit things right on the head. Even Scion stated they were marketing the car towards two very distinctly "different" groups.
One is the single budding professional or employed younger guy (19 to late 20s) that has just enough income to swing one of these but not go for the biggies.

The other was the "empty nester" (Mid 40s to infinity) that no longer requires an all round practical car and has enough disposable income for something more entertaining. The older crowd generally has a second vehicle (their own or a spouse) that can perform the family tasks.

They really were not targeting the guys in between much since they tend to be the ones that have family responsibilities to worry about. That of course does not preclude them since there are still plenty of that group but they were not really the target.
