Yup that and direct injection.

Subaru of America doesn't seem to know how or want to sell a car that deviates from their awd marketing profile.

This is why I don't think the twins will ever happen again, at least not in North America.

Now we wait for the new Supra if it even happens.

I'm hoping post-malaise (1999-2011) Toyota will eventually rebuild their own ability to design and produce fun cars.
The past few years do give me hope - a few green shoots have appeared (LC500, RC, SF-R, Toyobaru, FT-1 etc.).

So no, Subaru isn't the driving force behind this car - they'd have aborted it right from Day One, if not for Toyota's insistence. This car succeeded, almost despite Subaru, and not so much because of Subaru. This is a car built with Subaru's plant/property/equipment, but that's about it.

Subaru benefited immensely from what they learned with the BRZ - I'm not sure if the WRX and STi would handle as well as they do now, if not for the experience with the BRZ.
I wanna fix few things. Yes Subaru isn't enthused about this car. BUT first FT-86 team was made with BOTH Toyota and Subaru side by passionate people... just Toyota have very enthuse boss (Pres. Toyoda) vs Subaru/FHI boss was focus iSight and other family oriented Eco-cars.

Now, even Toyota side an issue as well. A lot of higher up group thought FT86 was a dumb idea and Pres. Toyoda is wasting money. While Subaru saying its very stupid idea to make NA engine RWD sports car. Took Tada-san countless meeting after meeting to finally make a frankenstein NA boxer RWD car. Even after every day "not bad" & approval. Took long time to actually move forward.

I'm pretty sure you can find all their story in one of the thread.

The 86 is a real oddball in the Toyota lineup and now that it is officially a "Toyota" is on borrowed time. Now's the time to get one if you have not already.

I run 03+ side vents, 03+ rear fascia and 03+ tail lights on my 2000 Spyder. I preferred the pre-facelift front end and headlights. It also has Celica seats, engine and 6 speed transmission, a FR-S shift knob and head unit and a bunch of TRD parts. It looks like 86/FR-S owners will be able to do the same now.

Personally, I would go 13-14 antenna, 13-16 front bumper, 17 headlights and rear bumper, TRD exhaust, 2017 wheels and lose the round 86 fender badges if I bought the 2017 as a base to start from.

Build what you want. The car has become modular so you can get the look you like with minimum effort and expense. There will be lots of owners of older cars who will trade parts with you.

If Toyota cannot get it right then you can expend a little effort and very little expense and do it yourself.

Except here in the US, but you knew that. That's not the point anyway.
