two things:

1) You can run the car on 90 octane, but do not expect peak performance. Over time, there is a slim possibility you could damage the engine one way or another

2) I assume you are talking about adding octane booster, which in reality doesn't do much at all. Adding ethanol would put you back to square one with a lower grade of gasoline in the first place.

My point being, just get used to the crickets and use the gas that this car was designed for.

Made an account to post this, but my FR-S Monogram was successfully lemon'd over crickets. (It had a bunch of other issues that racked up over 30 days in shop, but crickets and the fuel pump, along with Toyota's acknowledgement of the issue and continual work on part revisions, won me the case).

What did you replace it with?

Hi,
Im new here and im not sure if this is the place I can ask questions. I was wondering, does the majority of Scion Frs make this annoying sound? This is my 1st real "sport" car, and it sounds embarrassing to the point to drive my z4 instead if im going out with people. Is this lemon law-abled? I took it out to piercey toyota, where i brought the car and they said that it was meant to be this way and there is no fix. When I got the car new it didn't have the sound, so i was wondering if theres anything i can do, or am i stuck with the sound?

Use ethanol free gas if it's available.

Yep, I meant octane. I have been using it for a week, no crickets. I feel like the car is slightly slower to pick up, but I don't know if it's in my head. No knocking or anything like that either.

Given other's experience, its not in your head, your car is pulling timing to prevent detonation. It could still happen, so "caveat emptor." I'd take crickets over decreased efficiency, but if its that important to you...

Thread Summary in 3 points:

1) Yes, this is normal and a large number of twins seem to have it (see above poll)

2) Toyota does not have a fix and will not be fixing it. E0 (no ethanol) is not a guaranteed fix, as some owners have reported the crickets returning. Cold temperatures seem to make the crickets "hibernate" (ambient temperatures below 40 F)

3) They *may* fade over time. Many owners when they had their pump replaced reported them coming back "louder than ever." I am still on my original pump and the crickets seem to be a little quieter, or I am more used to them

Epilogue: Enjoy your car. You'll get used to the crickets, and you have an explanation in case anyone asks.

Honestly, I wish we could make my post there part of the FT86 FAQ.

Haven't yet. Had an eye issue, waiting on it to heal. Most likely candidate is a 2017 pony.

Toyota burned me hard, they were downright nasty throughout the entire process, and after they lost, they wound up trying to deface the arbitrator.

I didn't have them last year and burned Petro 94. 10% Ethanol.

Pulled it out of storage and chirp, chirp, chirp! Same fuel...

It's kinda cute actually and makes this car even more unique.

Most likely because of the ethanol content in our gas. The 0% ethanol places are out in the boonies for most city folks. This same fuel pump is causing issues in other cars too like Lexus and Acura. Really surprised so many companies still source it due to the complaints.

The chirp is prevalent with the Acura MDX and Lexus RC-F, I guess we're in good company. Look at the bright side, they spent a lot more than us and have the same noise.

Also want to add it's prevalent in the 2016 CX-5 skyactiv 2.4 liter motor at certain time periods.
