Carbon fiber monocoque with matte carbon exterior panels, diamond quilted leather interior, 16-way power seats with massage and hot and cold function, Tesla-style touch screen, AWD with 3 differentials that can divert 100% of power to 1 wheel, twin-charged super and turbo charger affixed to the new flat-8 engine with 720hp connected to a 10-speed triple clutch gearbox that is also a manual, and gets 112 mpge despite not being a hybrid. It has to weigh 2,500 pounds and cost under $20,000 or I will never seriously consider it!
The car is fine. It is a low-volume, low-cost sports coupe in a market of high volume muscle cars that can afford to offer more for less. Of course it is vital to manage expectations. The reality being in 6 months after people have seen the car in person wearing other colors 90% of people will say they actually prefer it. I will say I am not a fan of the taillights (current one included), wish they kept the garish fender badging, but am not all that offended by the front-end. It is goofy, but the current car isn't exactly the essence of perfection. I prefer not having buttons on my steering wheel but the shape doesn't really bother me. If it still drives well and offers better compliance over bumps and what-not, I am happy. If these changes result in better sales, good! The more it sells the more likely they will continue building the thing and replacing it every few years! |

But will it? We do not know if they reshaped the joins at hood and fenders for the new bumper. Probably not but we don't KNOW. As little as a 1/4 inch change or a slightly different angle can mean no go for the old bumper.

Power Increase?
Really! 5 whole hp? Why did they even bother. I get so tired of Toyota's overly conservative crap. Been a Toyota fan most of my 45 years, owned a MK1 MR2 for 25 of them. If they aren't going to take customers complaints about lack of power serious then don;t bother at all. The 3sge BEAMS was making 200hp almost 20 years ago and this is all they can deliver, with much higher compression, direct injection, and almost 20 years more experience in engine management? BS!!!

The big deal here is the gearing, which if you have been in a new ND you will know how much that helps making it feel quicker than it is.
Also the new bumper is going to help those who need more cooling/air for aftermarket heat exchangers.

Excited to see "86" as the new name!
I am a proud 1st Gen owner and it continues today with this press release. The restyled front end, back end, and headlights are going to be an acquired taste. My expectations for a toyota branded car must be too high, because this rendering is just not up to par. Headlights - Remind me of aftermarket Sypder Auto Front Bumper - 2nd what @Tcoat said (completely nailed it) Back End - Lines does not seem natural...perhaps they tried too hard to make it different Im interested to see the updated intake and the rest of the updated interior/engine bay in person! At the end of the day, I'm still a fan of the car and the continued lineage. |
