What quality control when my engine guy took my spare engine down for the rebuild he noted nearly everything was not very tight at all to the point of a few bolts being just over finger tight .

He has just stripped another FA20 for a build and couldn't believe how tight nearly every thing was to the point of using a small extension on the T bar to undo stuff.

My mates 2015 WRX STI crapped itself (bigend) at 7000 km and when pulled apart only had a MILD STEEL crank in it and an ordinary subbie water pump not a high flow STI jobbie .

Not good to say the least

Geeeeez :\ And here I thought Subaru was supposed to be known for the quality and longevity of there cars. The salesman always pitch that line about how many Subarus are still on the roads today. I don't know exactly how the BRZ/FRS is in terms of who contributed what to the build, so I could maybe understand some issues popping up, but if it's happening on WRXs too, then I don't know what to think.

I actually test drove a WRX earlier this week. I figure if mine is starting to have some problems, maybe I would look at a new one. I loved it. I had them appraise my car. The windshield has a chip that will need to be replaced in order to sell due to a chip (my insurance did do the resin fix thing and it hasn't gotten any worse), but other than a few minor rock chips it's in great shape. I obviously didn't tell them about the valve spring, but did tell them that I've had every oil change and major maintenance done on it. Now I know it has 80k miles (mostly highway), but it's in great shape and they come back with 9800 dollars but they would round it up to 10 as if that is doing me a huge favor. I laughed at the guy and walked out. This dealership is pretty cheap when it comes to trades. That's ultimately why I didn't buy my BRZ there because they wanted to give me peanuts for my Volvo S40.

I know it's out of warranty but you could still request a good faith repair (I think that is what they call it). Obviously a manufacturing issue unless you money shifted it. Worth a phone call or two anyway.

2018 Update
----------------

After this major recall on this issue, do you have any information on how they replaced your spring? Did they open up the cover?
