He hit the switch to release the trailer brakes when they show him in the cab. When you depress the pedal they make noise and when you let go they make noise. I think he was just gradually releasing the brakes.

Does the truck have enough torque without the gas pedal to launch on that incline? Can you heel toe in a truck? Is the clutch a pedal or can you use your left foot?

Funny that you guys are now nitpicking trailer truck uphill start techniques as if it had much to do with uphill starting a small car.

I am genuinely curious about the clutch/braking system on a truck though. I've never been in one

Taught a few people to drive manual gearboxes.

What I always do is flip a bicycle upside down and give the wheel a spin. I then tell them to use two fingers and try to grip the wheel to stop it. The idea is to not rip your fingers off or friction burn them.

Once they get the idea that the clutch is doing the same task, things go better.

Hills are another thing. Confidence comes into play and experience.

As to the FRS being a good or bad car to learn on, I would say that it is pretty much middle of the road. A clutch pedal with a long dead-zone before engagement is the worst.

Most likely not, I guess it would depend on the truck and the load.

The clutch pedal is a clutch, just heavier. I guess you could heel toe, depends on the pedal arrangement.

Tractors are setup like cars in their pedal arrangements. Airbrakes take getting used to, but they're still brakes. Clutch is still a clutch. Accelerator is still an accelerator.

Yep, reminds me of Harley riders in the Texas Hill Country. They ride into a corner, come to a stop, get a small floor jack out of a saddle bag, jack up the rear end, drag it around facing down the next (30 meter) straight, drop the rear , stow the jack get back on and ride to the next apex. Rinse, lather, repeat.

Reminds me of every morning as I approach a left turn that I can do flat out, no brakes, 40 MPH.
Other drivers slow to 10 MPH and make a "granny turn".
My racing nerve tries EVERY TIME to say, "just take them on the inside", but I have to remember "Use your STREET manners....."
