Rules vary by state in the US. Most states have a 40 a week hour rule on OT but no other requirements. Technically, you could work a 40 hour shift with appropriate breaks. Some states have an "over 10 hours in one 24 hour period" is OT.

Yeah, Im not sure on the basics in CA. Some companies seem to do things different that may be above the minimum (I know me and my GF get OT for anything over 8 in a day both in different fields but some of my friends have to get over 40/wk first) Split shift laws get complicated lol
