My question is: When people kill other people while street racing, why is it the car that gets the death sentence?

The issue with street racing is that people speed but are not concentrating on their driving but on their competitor. When you are so busy watching for where 'stangbro is you may as well be texting or eating a Bigmac, fries and a shake. This leads to stupid and unexpected maneuvers that result in crashes.
Distracted slighty by stangbro maybe, but the 'out ballz' the other guy is when it starts getting dangerous IMO. It's not as bad as road rage, but it can still escalate pretty good.

Ummm. No, you don't go 300mph in a plane that costs $100/hr, nor at all in most GA private aircraft owned by us normal folks. My Cherokee'll cruise at 105 knots (about 125mph) and there's small Cessnas, Pipers, and the like that'll go maybe another 20 knots-30 knots faster. The Cirrus SR22T, one of the fastest small private aircraft (and too expensive for "normal" people), has a max cruise of 213KTAS. I agreed with a lot of the stuff you wrote in the rest of the post that I snipped, with the caveat that breaking the law is breaking the law; the fact that almost everyone breaks the speed limit doesn't make it right, and it'll bite you if you get in an accident. I think our speed limits on interstates are lower than necessary for safety, but on the other hand with all of the idiots texting, putting on makeup, or otherwise driving dangerously, maybe that's not such a bad thing. Around towns and populated areas, just stick with them, OK?!? What's the harm?!?

I had a soccer mom roar past me yesterday in a Dodge Caravan. We were in a 40, I was doing 42, and she was riding my back bumper like I was doing 15. There was a string of cars in front of me, and I wasn't up the backside of the guy in front of me, so she screamed past me gunning that ol' Caravan for all it was worth, then cut me off and slipped in in front of me. That earned her the right to be in front of me for the next 9 miles of single lane traffic at 50 mph. She arrived at the next town, still the car in front of me, a whole half a second before I did. Definitely worth it... Good driving, Mom. I hope your kids survive your parenting. Sheeesh. What is with this STUPID need to be ahead of just one more car?

Seriously.. we're all going to get where we're going, and speeding and driving aggressively in traffic really doesn't make a significant difference in how fast you get there .. unless you REALLY drive dangerously. The previous poster was right about one of the big problems being the unknowns.. the reactions and driving of the folks around you. Why make the situation worse?

I get my kicks driving the speed limit (or as much above it as I have to to be be safe if EVERYONE else is way over), but enjoying the twisties while remaining at the limit regardless of the "suggested" signs if I'm familiar with the road and not in close proximity to others.

Sermon over.. the plate will be passed shortly. Please enjoy today's offeratory by the children's choir.

Sorry my day job I fly a PC12, thats where I do 300mph all day long. I am in a flying club where 40 of us own operate 3 airplanes, a Mooney, a Cardinal, and an Archer. That's where I pay between $100-130/hr wet tach time. The Pilatus is about $1500/hr to charter maybe half that operate with no pilots or maintainence. I never meant to imply that you could go 300mph for $100/hr. I can do 200mph in the Mooney though. I googled your tail number, nice Cherokee 140!

Ya but the ball out can be just as hazardous at 40mph as at 140 really.

I did exactly the same thing yesterday: on a short four-lane section of a two-lane no-passing road I overtook one car and then spent next few miles in front of that car. Why? Because it was fun to experience a little acceleration and to drive at 60 or so for a moment, amidst droning at boring 45.

Agree with this. I've made some trips on the 401 westbound through Toronto where the pace in the hammer lane gets up to 150km/h sometimes if everything is moving really well. The reality in that situation was that the safest thing to do was go with the flow of traffic and give everyone ample space or get out of the hammer lane if you aren't comfortable driving those speeds.

LOL... point definitely granted. My bad. I was confused by the hourly figure you quoted. Sooo.. let's go flying!

I just ego-googled our plane 'cause I was intrigued by the pic; I found the same one. Strangely, it didn't look quite like our plane, and I don't recognize the airport. After doing a little digging, it turns out that the photo was taken at Zahn's airport, possibly in 1968. I confess our plane shows her years now a bit more than that pic, is now white with brown, less graphics, and needs a bit of love to the interior, but we rebuilt the engine a few hundred hours ago, updated the radio, and she's IFR capable and flies like a dream.. so she's still loved!

Best..

Barry

I was going to compliment you on your crosswind technique too, oh well. Nice sideslip, one wheel at a time, good job whoever it was. I'm from CT but I could meet you halfway in Albany or something for a "$100 hamburger."

I don't ever street race, but I speed everywhere I go. Even to work or to the store, and zipping through heavy traffic. It's a thrill, especially in a twin. I've never hit a thing because of what other people would call my "reckless" driving. I know my cars limits, I know my limits, and believe it or not, I'm really cautious and safe regardless of what my speedometer says lol. I'd say it's "Wreckless driving" lol a mix of reckless driving but still cautious enough to not be stupid

I'm going to try and be nice, but this is exactly the kind of stuff I was talking about. The issue is NOT whether you can handle your car well at excess speeds well above the speed limit, the issue is whether the cars AROUND YOU can handle your excess speeds and the surprise your maneuvers cause THEM. It's sort of like a musician complaining about having to go to rehearsals because THEY know their part. That ain't the issue.. it's how that part fits with the WHOLE THING and how it affects the other parts.. in this case, the OTHER folks driving while you're weaving in and out.

A true and very scary case in point. A few months ago on the way home from a gig I was on a two lane (in each direction) highway. I was doing my usual 57 or so, and was starting to approach a slower moving car in front of me. I put on a signal to indicate I was about to pull into the passing lane, checked my mirrors, did a head check.. all clear.. started to move over, checked again, and these two idiot sheriff's cars came SCREAMING up the hammer lane. With no exaggeration, they had to be doing well over 100mph. THis was at night. NO flashing lights, no sirens.. just regular headlinghts. They weren't there, then they were there. I just barely saw them soon enough to stay in my lane, and if I had continued moving into the passing lane they would have killed all of us. I'm sure they thought they could handle their cars, too... that's NOT the issue.

I stopped at our local police station on the way home (about 12:30 AM) and relayed the story. Great guys. They rolled their eyes when I identified the two as sheriff's vehicles, and told me that they'd had other complaints too and they knew who the two guys were and would look into it.

Sooo.. in the interest of saving a life, whether its yours, or some innocent person not expecting a suddenly appearing traffic weaver... CUT IT OUT.

Love,

Barry

You should be mindful of your close rate and relative speed to the traffic you are passing. They can and will change lanes, often without warning, and sometimes abruptly. I like being faster than traffic around me if I can't find an open 'hole' where I'm not near any humans. I think the reason is it feels like I'm more in control. Which may have some truth to it, but it's also a bit of an illusion because people are just as likely to swerve left or right as they are to speed up or slow down. So I would be mindful of how fast and/or close you zip by the guys with their cruise control on.
