Automatic Transmission Surge

Hi all,

Am I the only one who experiences a surge in M1 mode while downshifting from 2nd to 1st and coming to a stop?

Basically when I downshift into 1st while coming to a stop the car surges forward again. This happens around 10mph.

Edit: It's been getting rougher over the years.

Yup, take your foot off the gas, even slight pressure on the gas peddle will often cause that

why are you downshifting from 2nd to 1st? it'll do it automatically in manual mode. I never downshift when coming to a stop with my AT. I only downshift to change gears on the fly.

Yeah I know but I like the engine braking and I didnt spend 4k on exhaust to not listen to it hahaha! I downshift and it hits 3-4k rpms from 2nd to 1st often.

If it was an issue I am sure I would have found out by now. I drive around in 1st alot too, like every time I am in a parking lot.

Most of the time I'll downshift all the way to 2nd. But, not usually on purpose into 1st. It does sound good though with a nice exhaust setup. I've had it since Nov 2012 and no issues. I'm also curious if it's in the manual.

I read the whole manual 3 years ago and don't remember reading that or I wouldn't do it haha. However AT and MT are very very different and I know for a fact you dont want to downshift into 1st on a MT but the AT is a whole different animal

I would stop doing that. In the MT (which I own) under normal conditions, you physically CANNOT shift from 2nd into 1st.
Emphasize "normal conditions."
You could force it if you want to but you'd probably crack a synchro. 1st and 2nd are not synchro meshed in the MT versions of these cars.

The surge may be the sign that the transmission is failing. It could mean that the repeated stress on the transmission is causing a slip and as it gets worse you'll eventually lose 1st gear.
You say it's not broken yet, but the surge is proof that something is not working correctly! Therefore broken!

Can't deny that it probably sounds sweet though...

MT and AT are very very different. I dont think its hurting anything. The reason he gets a surge is because he is adding fuel and the ECU also adds fuel to blip the throttle therefore the car makes more power then anticipated and accelerates a bit. if OP stays off the gas then it will blip and do its thing fine.

I've read the manual 3 times front to back. Only the MT, where it's not recommended to downshift into 1st.

Can you post a video with sound? It could have something to do with your tune or exhaust system. A restricted Cat, or leaky gasket could be affecting it.

Borla, local shop built an over pipe as there were not many on the market at the time, motiv test pipe, and TRD catback which was also modified. That was over 3K CAD with shipping duty ect when I did it all a long ass time ago if I remember right
