Reason people ask why is that it's part of the process of vetting a private party purchase. The reason helps to explain the asking price (high/medium/low) for the item. Also since private party sales are usually non-refundable, anyone that buys something second hand and doesn't ask this simple question making an uninformed buy and thus is asking for trouble. Not only might they lose cash, they could also put themselves at risk of mechanical malfunction.

Common answers to "why are you selling" that I've seen are:

• I decided that I'm not going to install or use the part after all (some TPMS I bought from a guy).
• I bought this part with the budget I had, but since then have been able to upgrade to a more expensive part that I wanted for whatever reason (some hood struts I bought second hand).
• The part doesn't function as expected but is still usable (intakes bought for this car don't make much power, but some people still like them for the sound).
• The color doesn't match as expected, not up to my standards, but could be useable for someone else (WRB and white color items especially).
• The part was/is new but imperfect (scratch/dent) (installed for a few miles then taken off).
• The part has lots of miles on it but is cosmetically in good shape and seems to function well still (mechanical wear items like axles come to mind).
• The part mfg offers no warranty or customer support and I need it (any part that is more than 1 year old could have this problem)
• Someone died in car
