I'm a big fan of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", but even within their own output it seems clear that the most important album had to be:

Personally, I like it less, but I know that's heresy. I did see the exhibit for this at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland a few weeks ago and it was super cool.

It's funny, everyone has their favorite period of popular music. I really loved the 70's, sort of paid attention to the 80's, and then the 90's were a total void for me. Got back into it in the 2000's and even more in this decade. Some of it ain't bad.

I will offer you a challenge. Go listen to the first four movements of Holst's "The Planets". If you don't like that, then you don't like any classical music. But I think you're missing out on a lot.

My philosophy is: if you like the music and it adds to your life's enjoyment, then go for it. It doesn't have to be what I like. But then I expect you to be open to and respect my own choices and other people's choices in music. I promise that I will listen to what you like, but I don't promise to like it in return...

The Kaiser car company which made the model named jeeps built the last true, specifically made for the military, vehicle in 1969 (and it was more truck then jeep). The other side is covered with Roger Water's words about the album and how it came about and the disdain he felt for himself/the band prior. It's interesting:

"In the Old Days, pre-Dark Side of the Moon,
Pink Floyd played to audiences which,
by virtue of their size, allowed an intimacy of
connection that was magical.

However, success overtook us and by 1977
we were playing in football stadiums.

The magic, crushed beneath the weight of
numbers. We were becoming addicted to
the trappings of popularity.

I found myself increasingly alienated in
that atmosphere of avarice and ego until
one night in the Olympic Stadium, Montreal,
the boil of my frustrations burst.

Some crazed teenage fan was clawing his
way up the storm netting that separated
us from the human cattle pen in front of the
stage screaming his devotion to the demi-gods
beyond his reach.

Incensed by his misunderstanding and
my own connivance, I spat my frustration in
his face.

Later that night; back at the hotel
shocked by my behaviour I was faced with a choice.

To deny my addiction and embrace that
"comfortably numb" but "magic-less" existence
or accept the burden of insight, take
the road less travelled and embark on the
often painful journey to discover who I was
and where I fit.

The Wall was the picture I drew for myself

The other album that I would nominate for the greatest of all time is this:



All of the songs on side 1 of the vinyl album were hits (Hotel California, New Kid in Town, Life in the Fast Lane, Wasted Time) and the first (Victim of Love), third (Try and Love Again) and 4th (The Last Resort) songs of side 2 also were hits. Only one of the songs on the album was not a hit, Pretty Maids All in a Row. Several of these were No. 1. I pulled this album out about 6 months ago after not having heard it for years and was stunned to hear it with fresh ears. What an accomplishment!
