AE Performance FRS Track Journal 1: Willow Springs Hankook RS3

Hey everyone,

Saturday June 9th, 2012 we took our Stock FRS to Willow Springs Raceway. The day started off with three of us meeting at our shop in Valencia, CA. We packed our camera gear and all three of us road together in the FRS. The back seat surprisingly wasn't bad. It took about an hour and 15 minutes to get there.

We unloaded and luckily made it to the drivers meeting on time.

There, we met Jorge, another FRS owner. His car was a Hot Lava FRS.

After the Drivers meeting we pull out some of the extra weight and hit the track. Our car was completely stock, with the exception of the Hankook RS3 Tires we installed. We were still on stock alignment.

We were in the Blue Group first. Which turned out to be a lot of beginner drivers in some very high horsepower cars. This made it difficult to put in any good full laps

At this point we changed groups and moved to the red group, which gave us an open track and allowed us to put down a good amount of hot laps without lap traffic.

Throughout the day we noted all track times, tire pressures, and tire temps.

The very last lap of the day we managed to pull a 1:39:9. Track conditions around that time were hot and very windy.

We're excited to do some mods and hit the track again very soon.

Here is a video documenting our last run.

This is the first of many FRS Track Journals we will be doing. We plan on getting multiple FRS' and BRZ's and building them for the track and street. This Ultramarine FRS is going to be a mild build daily driving street/track car. Expect new AE Performance products in the near future. We are also doing service and installs on FRS and BRZ's, track prep, driver couching, and much more.

So what pressures did you run and what type of temps did you notice.

I ran this weekends autox with a codriver and we noticed that to our surprise we have equal heat across the tire with the stock 35psi pressures. 225/45/17s Rs3s were what we ran. That's pretty amazing that they were do dead on with pressures and such from the factory.

We did end up spraying the rs3s down once we hit 135 almost 140.

For a baseline we started at 30psi cold and came in at 35 hot except for the front left, which is always a psi or two hotter because of the right handers at Big Willow. We reset to 34 hot (33 FL) and the car felt pretty good there.

Towards the end of the day we went down to 28 cold and 32 hot and it made a significant difference. The car felt a little better and our times were about a quarter to half second faster.

With the stock alignment we were getting even temps on the right hand side of the car, but because of all the rights at Big Willow we were actually hotter in to out on the lefts especially the front left.

That is to be expected with stock alignment though, and like most cars, once we dial in the angles, I expect the car to be much better.

Overall though extremely satisfied with the performance.

Next step is Data Acquisition which will really give us the big picture on what this car will be capable of...

Yeah, that sounds right.

I'd be interested to see the actual spec, it was definitely a lot though.

Nice, yeah when we run our M3 race car on the RS3's we are in the upper 30's hot, but with the much lighter FR-S the car worked better just above 30.

What track were you at?

Yeah, we were surprised how light the car really is...

Looks like your pretty close to Road America (which is awesome), do you have any plans to run your car there?
