"Proposed Rule" Not the first time the EPA/some gov't entity has tried to change things to for the American Gearhead. It won't make it past committee.

These forums need much stricter moderation.

Yeah, from what I can see it is only medium and heavy duty vehicles which should not affect light duty DDs and racecars. I'm obviously not a lawyer but I don't think we need to be worried about it.

For the lazy:

Quote:
The Environmental Protection Agency has issued a clarification in response to claims that it is proposing a ban on converting road vehicles into racecars.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) issued a statement on Monday indicating its intention to fight an EPA proposal to change the wording to the Clean Air Act as it applies to the installation of aftermarket parts that might circumvent stock emission-control devices. But in a separate statement released to the media today, the EPA said that the proposed change is merely intended to clean up the wording of an existing law:

"People may use EPA-certified motor vehicles for competition, but to protect public health from air pollution, the Clean Air Act has – since its inception – specifically prohibited tampering with or defeating the emission control systems on those vehicles," the agency said in its statement.

"The proposed regulation that SEMA has commented on does not change this long-standing law, or approach. Instead, the proposed language in the Heavy-Duty Greenhouse Gas rulemaking simply clarifies the distinction between motor vehicles and nonroad vehicles such as dirt bikes and snowmobiles. Unlike motor vehicles – which include cars, light trucks, and highway motorcycles – nonroad vehicles may, under certain circumstances, be modified for use in competitive events in ways that would otherwise be prohibited by the Clean Air Act.

"EPA is now reviewing public comments on this proposal."

There is no wording in the proposal to outline how the rule might be policed and breaches penalized, and RACER is awaiting additional details regarding what sort of vehicles or circumstances might be eligible for exemption. Current modified-production racing takes place under the existing wording of the rules without any EPA intervention.
Even so, the reworded law – if passed – will not go into effect until 2018, and will not be retroactive. Consequently, current race-modified production cars appear unlikely to be affected either way.

People post threads about an issue when there is already a recent thread (or several threads) about the same issue.

It's a portion of TPP, copyright influence and SOPA/PIPA influence...

BTW, we can bar it now and unite against it, but eventually it'll pop back again... yeah... 1/3 of my life is in politics/working with the state govt... I've seen crAp like this before. SOPA and PIPA are slowly being re-introduced too. /sniff

It'll slowly seep on to every vehicle...trust me I'm an internet doctor.

I really wish people would actually read legislation before posting paranoid clicky threads like this linked to blogs like Jalopnik. It's every forum, every time. Why?

Thanks @mav1178 for keeping the sanity around here.

I can see where you're coming from but I don't think you are correct in this specific instance, and here's why:
I you post an thread about cancer and someone creates one about curing cancer are they the same thread? no, they are based on the same general subject, but the discussion is not going to be the same and the finer points are going to be different.

Same applies here, talking about the act and talking about a concrete way to oppose it(and encourage people to oppose it) are two very different things (kinda like why there is a brz car thread and a brz owner's thread).

Had he not created a new thread it is fairly possible his topic of discussion would have derailed the more general discussion in the other thread.

BECAUSE RACECAR!

Whats to keep us from buying parts over seas? This will go nowhere, when they figure out how many billions in taxes they are reaping from said sold parts

EPA are bunch of pencil pushing, living with moma activist with nothing better to do than regulate lives. I push to disban the EPA as it is right now and its been recommended by many folks and even many politicians

I'd sign that thing but I learned my lesson from signing one of those. You will get hounded to sign any and every petition that comes along.

So I'm guessing their definition of a race car is a mini van with a drop in filter

I think that this thread has a purpose beyond the discussion in the original thread, which is to directly call people's attention to the White House petition.

However, the title really needs to be changed because right now that's completely unclear to someone browsing through the forum...
