Went outside and ripped (figuratively) the cover panel off. No plugs unplugged. Also did the key thing again just to make sure.

just a note to everyone fixing this themselves, you need to eventually take it to the dealer to have this "fixed" even though you already fixed it. The reason being is because the NHTSA requires that the dealers report the vin numbers of all the vehicles that they had performed this fix on for liability reasons. The NHTSA basically needs the dealers to prove to them that they fixed the affected cars. If, for some reason, say you sold your car to a third party, not the dealer, and the guy that bought the car from you gets in an accident, they could very well point the finger at you for never bringing the vehicle in to the dealer. Just a heads up...

I don't think there is one litigation case involving the accident being the fault of the last owner who didn't do a recall campaign, that lies on the fault of the dealer.

The less time at the dealer the better, auto owners will have to take it in anyway it means it'll take that much less time for some tech looking under the dash

Guilty. I don't think I have pulled/pushed/twisted a parking brake on an auto in my life. Granted about half my cars it didn't work anyway but that is beside the point. Now I also have never had an issue with an auto transmission in my life so not to worried about it and not gonna start doing it now.

Could do it on my Toyota pickup since I bought it. I just replaced ignition since under rough road conditions it would fall off

I think I did the check incorrectly. I put my car in D with my foot on the brake. I was able to pull out the key. So the TSB says car needs to go into N or did I read wrong. I'm tired n cranky but feel free to reply.

Well now, @Tcoat when you speak of a "parking brake on an auto" are you talking about an "automobile" or an "automobile with an automatic transmission" ... ??

If you are talking about an automobile with an automatic transmission, when you get out of your flatlands and get up into the mountains, it's possible to be on a steep enough slope that when you put the transmission in "park" and let off the brake, the pressure will not allow the transmission "pawl" to let go, so as you can move it out of "park".

Then you might have to find 6 men or a tow vehicle to get ya going.

And, NO, I don't wanna talk about how I know that ......

You read it correctly.

Do what I did and rip off the panel cover. I thought it was the big plug pictured in my earlier post but there were a couple other smaller plugs behind. Nothing was unplugged and I wasn't able to pull the key out.

I'll try ripping off the panel tomorrow. Tired now plus I just got done installing a SSD and cloning it.
