Not to hijack this thread but, I have been thinking about this as well and have a bit of a different idea...

Best likened to some of the Mini Cooper R53 and R56 aftermarket drink holders.

I have seen the OEM armrest that completely covers the center and is hinged on one side and and I like it. I was thinking of a universal mount for a cup holder that could also hold a phone, iPad, and drinks. I was thinking of buying the hinged armrest and looking to mount the cup holder/universal mount between the two separate front dash panels.

IMO the center cup holders for both front seats are ridiculously impractical based on there location and worse somewhat dangerous for the driver.

Number 2 looks really good. I like the concept of #3, but not really the execution.

My last car was an RSX, and I loved how they designed the cup holder/storage area. There was basically a shallow tray that you could slide out over the cup holders. You could then conceal small items in the cupholders underneath, and then slide out the empty the storage tray. A little tough to explain, but this picture kinda shows how it works.

I'd definitely spring for a #2 for $40 or less.

#2 appears to be the most popular by far...

When I get some free time I'll do some measurements, unless someone else beats me to to :p

Rather see built in cup holders. That removable one is annoying and never stays locked in. I still like two cup holders, just want them non movable.
