How do you ask for a raise at a job I feel as if i should get paid more for sitting on forums

also no really how do you talk to a boss about a raise.

"I got kids to feed."

or

"The hookers have been jacking up their rates lately."

or

I did this the other day.

Schedule a meeting or ask for one to be scheduled when they have time.

When the meeting comes start by explaining how you feel you've grown or evolved your working responsibilities significantly since your last raise or whatever the last mile stone was.

Explain it in a way where your boss will be able to see your side and understand your worth.

If all goes well... profit.

If you're straight forward and nice/calm enough the worst that can happen is he/she will let you know their thoughts and plans for your career path with the company.

Seems like a real good plan/idea. but i am so bad at words and talking to people in real life. I wish This could be done via email. haha

On a more real note this is something I have been very successful at.


Try this:


Prepare your materials before you ask. Have very specific examples of how you have been an asset to the company, saved them money or made them more profitable. Walking in and saying "pay me more I have been here a while" will not work.


Request a formal meeting to present your case. Tell them what you want to discuss and set a time and day. This gives them time to consider it and you may walk in and they say right off the top "Here this is what we have for you". Walking into the boss' office and saying "I want a raise" takes them by surprise and usually the response is "I will think about it" which rarely actually happens.


Be ready to accept criticism on your job performance. Nobody is perfect (except maybe me and possibly Ultra, Hum and Hawk) and a fault that may normally go unmentioned can be thrown on the table when you ask for more money. Do not get all defensive and evasive when they say "Well we would love to but you and that damn forum..." Acknowledge their concern (Do not necessarily agree it is a concern just let them know that you understand they have it) and state clearly that you will address it.


If they deny you at that point keep your cool and ask if their is anything you can do to change the situation, such as take on extra responsibilities, work to a promotion, extra training or something that could improve your value down the road. Remember that there are very few employees that are valuable enough that the old "Give me a raise or I quit" gambit actually works for.

Yeah its not easy to ask for a raise. Make sure you update your resume and put frequent forum goer on there and show your boss. hahaha
