Alright, so here's the information:

The airbag module is a whole unit (cover, bag, and the explosive "bomb"). The part number is actually listed on our STI and tS parts list thread: 98211CA070VH

So I decided to look further into it and found out that the part is actually not a tS restricted part like the badge or the door sills; you can purchase it in Japan. The reason that japanparts.com and other distribution sites won't sell it is the other obvious reason: its classified as a dangerous good due to it being an explosive device. They won't sell it for safety and legal reasons. In addition, it requires using a shipping service that is authorized to handle goods like that. Last but not least, customs; for the U.S., the recipient must be "approved" to receive dangerous goods (didn't look further into this).

However, I remembered that Carson Toyota here in CA actually sells the 86 airbag (didn't look further into how he gets them though), which led me to the DIY thread from a friend of mine who did the swap. It requires removal and transfer of the "bomb" from our stock air bag cover to the JDM one because the harnesses are different.

So that gave me the idea: since I have to remove the "bomb" anyway, why not have it purchased in Japan and have it removed. Then it no longer qualifies as a dangerous good and can be brought in no questions asked (and before you ask, I did inquire into japanparts.com and other places about doing this and they all said no...for the same reasons ).

Luckily, a good friend of mine (who is now upgraded to awesome friend) had just flown to Japan for TAS 2016. I gave him the part number, and he had it special ordered; however, it had to picked up at a specific distribution and warehouse location, which required him to travel out about 2-3 hours to get it (again, awesome). Since he's well connected to local auto and repair shops in Tokyo, he was able to remove the "bomb" and have it properly disposed of before putting it in his luggage and bringing it back for me.

So in summary: it is possible but takes quite a lot of work. And also, yeap, money. It was about 900 USD to get it overall.

Something that I will mention right off the bat: this was entirely a special favor to me and we've been friends for years. My friend was traveling there for TAS. I cannot and will not be asking him on behalf of anyone to also pick one up due to the amount of time he had to spend out of his way to even get it in the first place.

You can ask to JP Car Parts to send you only cover with emblem....and retain airbag unit. You will pay around $450 (moreover) ONLY for a cover airbag but it's genuine....
Might be solved this way, IMHO.
In Europe is forbidden to carry airbags as are explosives. You need an authorization/declaration from dealer , you need to have Import license (mandatory= for explosives), strength box (steel jail).
50 cms of paper to exhibit.......too troubles.
INDIVIDUALS cannot buy from dealer any airbag module directly. Only authorized personnel (dealers network, bodyshops ) can buy this item.

They won't. I asked previously. These places won't modify parts they receive. They only sale as is. Plus you're doing them to handle what is essentially an explosive device, which I'm sure won't make them feel comfortable not to mention the logistics of having to dispose of it

Wow. It took some serious work to get it over here. Looks great man and it's just another part that makes your build unique. After talking with you at meets and such, your build has inspired me to add some more STI parts to my Series.Blue. Gurney flap and front ornament are going on this weekend and I have already installed a few parts under the hood. Thanks for keeping us in the loop with what your doing to yours.

I found this on Yahoo! Japan Auctions page. The seller wants 50,000 yen (meaning it's a restricted part dang!)

I knew there had to be a great story behind this part. Congrats man, it's a nice and unique addition!

I hate you as much as I love you.

One day, I will be baller enough to spend $900 and call in huge favors for a legit airbag cover for an interior mod that no more than a dozen people will actually notice.

Are you looking to adopt a 37 year old?

I just swapped the STi gauge face and needles onto my existing cluster. The logo doesn't illuminate during the day but still does at night with headlights on. Also maintains my correct odometer reading and no fear of bricking the ECU.

@ DSOmegaX... Beautiful work mate, simply beautiful.

I'll try to download photobucket and get some pics up today. I also have pretty much all the STi stuff including the Recaros on mine. Just missing the GT wing, and the tS rear subframe ( All the other stuff is fitted to my original).

I don't think the STI logo is supposed to light up if the dash isn't lit?
