The thing people do for looks. Wider wheels are more concave, and that's the in vogue look these days.

There's some performance benefit in going wide: the hardcore autocross people like to go as wide as 255 or 265, and track cars benefit from going as wide as 225 or 235. Autocross is more about lateral stability, and the extra weight from meatier tires is offset by that. Fast tracks will likely expose the increased mass. It's all a trade-off between lateral grip and weight. Wider tires also heat up slower, so on higher power cars on the track there's some benefit to be gained there. That said, aggressive offsets and higher widths also change the roll center on these cars, which will make them feel less playful.

Bear in mind, MK4 Supras came with 255s in the rear, Ecoboost Mustangs have 255s square on their track pack, and even the Mustang GT is only 275 in the rear. The whole, "I need wider tires for the power that I'm going to be making if I ever get forced induction" excuse that I hear all of the time on here is pretty thin. Compound makes more of a difference than width. I suppose if you're going to use Chinese tires, you'll want to go as wide as possible.

I've just been lazily browsing through threads/posts from days gone by and all that I'm seeing is: "banned" "banned" "banned" "banned" "banned" "banned" "banned." haha

We've lost a lot of good men in the journey for best thread content.

As a form of entertainment, I like to hunt through their threads to see what got them banned. Am I a bad person?

The problem with that is whatever their offense was to get them banned was most likely deleted.

Yeah.... not a fan but hey its not my car lol. I want slightly wider tires so I don't wear them out as fast. I got a feeling it doesn't work like that though lol

Because 18x9.5's were already on the back of my car when I bought it, received a wheel Sunday and holy fucking jesus balls are those things giant dishes without the tire on them.

That being said they look nice and I need wider tires to put my power down (supercharged). 9.5 may be a bit of overkill though

See personally I rather run a 100 tread wear or less R compound tire in a 235-245 size on like 17x7.5 (or whatever the widest I can safely get on a 7.5) Just to keep the weight down. I already seem to be buying a new set of tires every year so I dont think tread life will be an issue. Or do I have the wrong mindset??

No, that's about right. I'd actually rather run tires closer to size to the wheels for increased sidewall stiffness, but compound/tire model can make up for that, too.
