Question Muffler delete affects MPG

Before I get the Borla UEL header, I am looking to do either a muffler delete (Berk) or install a Catback exhaust.

I have heard that doing a muffler delete improves efficiency but decreases gas mileage. I have also been hinted that a muffler delete is the ricer thing to do not the tuner thing to do.

Suggestions?

Why would it be the ricer thing to do? Neither is going to get you any significant gain, so get whatever sounds best to you. I have a berk dual muffler delete collecting dust in the garage because it was just too loud with my catless header. It sounded great but fuck it was loud.

Get the header first.
Muffler delete alone is loud enough, with the header, you may wish you got a "real" exhaust(muffler).
How can it improve efficiency and decrease gas mileage? If you mean .5 hp increase and decrease in gas mileage because you are driving to hear the sound, then yes.
Yes it is ricer. Makes a bunch of noise and maybe makes .5 hp.
Get a header first.

I'm running a berk, standard everything else. Mileage not affected, efficiency not affected. It sounds good but as soon as you start upgrading the rest it will become unbearable.

Get the header first. Then gauge whether you really want that muffler delete.

Get the header first, I have the berk muffler delete, and I bought it full well knowing I'm going to be different and keeping the stock EL headers, also you heard wrong about efficiency and gas mileage. The gas mileage thing is a placebo effect probably caused by people gassing it to get out of the drone range and get to the rpm range where it sounds good, efficiency wise you gain no real horsepower from an axle back of any kind in our cars or even "efficiency" you spoke up it's a pipe versus a muffler flow wise. The only advantage of the muffler delete I was thinking of was cutting the extra 20 lbs off the rear. Also the only other mods you can really do to the car after a muffler delete before it becomes unbearably illegally loud, is a resonated front pipe (any manufacturer HKS would be the most quiet) and nameless mid pipe (only ones so far to make a mid pipe) which would probably only net 5-8 horsepower in the best most perfect world scenario if even that. You're better off if looking for serious power and subaru rumble getting the UEL and a tune, for me I can't go that root because I want to be as emissions legal as I can for the long term if a visual check comes up.

Yea thats why I have seen just headers with stock muffler and I know hearing the sound through YouTube is not the same as hearing it next to you. Did you notice any less gas mileage or difference when you had the berk?

Think about that, how can you Improve efficiency and decrease MPG???
(unless you just drive the crap out of it to hear the exhaust)

I have also been hinted that a muffler delete is the ricer thing to do not the tuner thing to do.

Do you want it to sound like a Subie or a Honda??? That will answer the ricer question. First Get a UEL header for a Subie rumble, Get a loud ass single exhaust for a Honda, ricer, JMO
( save your money and do it right the first time if your a tuner, go on the cheap and change it multiple times to be a ricer, in the long run ricers spend the same if not more than a tuner)

Suggestions?

OK enuff of the sterotype ricer rant.

Do yourself a favor and look up the true definition of ricer you will be surprised it really has nothing to do about the way you mod your car to your own taste, but more on how you act.

IF you want to know about performance just PM me I'll be glad to help

My PPE header and N1 Invidia was loud as hell on start up, I can't imagine a muffler delete and a header smh

"a utensil with small holes through which boiled potatoes or other soft food can be pushed to form particles of a similar size to grains of rice."

Huh. That IS surprising.

UPDATE:
I went with Dezod Motorsports

I've driven with the Dezod for a couple of days.

The only issue I had with the install, was that one of the gaskets was already cracked, which led to an exhaust leak on the first day. However, on the second day (yesterday) I checked for exhaust leaks and none were found. I am not sure if it will pop up again or not but I will keep an eye out.

I am loving this exhaust. Low-Rumble. Wonderful in the cabin. I can easily control the sound whenever, since it opens up when you gas it. I did think it was going to be louder at higher RPMs but the engine sound takes over then but definitely went with the right exhaust here.

Does anyone know how much the stock exhaust weighs? This would be from the cat back, or just the muffler section.

I'm thinking of changing/deleting the muffler for the weight savings and a slightly more aggressive sound (don't expect much performance change).

Thanks,

Ha, answered my own question....

<http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57904>

I actually did weigh everything out it breaks down as follows

Stock Exhaust

Mid pipe: 11.5 lbs
Rear section: 28.5 lbs

TOTAL: 40 lbs

Dezod Exhaust

Mid section: 9.5 lbs
S-section: 3 lbs
Rear section: 16 lbs

TOTAL: 28.5 lbs

So there's a weight savings of about 11.5 lbs.
